Planning - How long before?

When do you start planning? Is 1 year to far in advance? I need to plan that far budget wise to make sure we have a very enjoyable trip and don't have to worry about money while there. What are tips for planning and budgeting? We are going Thanksgiving 2012.

We booked our trip in August to go in October 2012, giving us over a year to plan.

We are putting a set amount away in a savings account each month to pay for it, so we don't have to worry when it gets to balance paying day! We are also using the trip as an oppertunity to try and sell some of the bits in our house we no longer need/want which is also helping add pennies to the pot.

I think we are going to buy gift cards for Disney. This may be the only way we can save and make sure the money doesn't get spent on something else. I have read that other people do this too.
