We're currently planning Hilton Head for a week next year - somewhere between March and May of 2009.

Is there a date range between March and May that this place isn't overrun with children, that 2 adults with no children could find the place tranquil? We are skeptical, due to trip reports posted recently. TIA!

Hilton Head in general is a family destination and there will be children on the island throughout the year. Since March and April are when many schools have their Spring Break, there will be a high number of families at the DVC resort during that time. Early May would be a time with fewer children around, but even then families will be enjoying the resort.

As for finding the place tranquil, there are many quiet areas at the resort and at Hilton Head in general, so if you are trying to avoid being around children it can be done.

Good luck with your decision.

The third week of April is MA school vacation week - so a bunch of children could be there then. I have been to HH in the Spring and Summer. It's a pretty small resort, so I never found it over run with children. During the pool parties and campfires - all the children come, otherwise I never found the pools that crowded. And I always found our balconies to be quiet.

My DW and I went this year during the last week of April/ 1st week of May. It was very quiet. We were told by a cast member that it is generally a very quiet time of the year for HHI. We had a fantastic time.

Right there with ya Disney Villan! We are gonna try mid September. Kids are all back to school, holidays over, weather should still be real warm. Also, end of May is good, kids aren't all out of school yet. :goodvibes

We've been twice - both times in October. I find HH to be a wonderfully relaxing place! Like Doc indicated, there are places to relax. I doubt that it would ever be "kid" free. Some schools are on a quarter system and have vacations/breaks while others are still in school.

I wouldn't worry too much about that and just plan on enjoying yourself.

My husband and I went this past May from the 4th - 10th and we had such a great time. It was our first time to HH and we loved it! Weather was great, it wasn't crowded at all, yet there was plenty to do. We were told by many cast members that we were there at the perfect time. Try it then, you'll like it! :thumbsup2

Well, thanks to all your replies below, DH and I are going to risk Hilton Head for early May of 2009.

We like travelling in May, as our anniversary falls then - and we really are curious about HH - but not willing to risk a soured anniversary if we don't care for it. May 2009 marks our 15th anniversary, so we really want to plan carefully!

To ensure that all goes well, we are going to split the stay - flying in to SAV to stay at HH, then drive to a WDW DVC resort for the 2nd half of our trip, then fly back home via MCO.

That way we will have the chance to see HH for ourselves and assert whether or not we'd use it again, with little risk to our special event.

Thanks everyone!

Remember that HH's big draw is the SE United States. My niece and newphew (who go to HH, but not DVC every year) get out of school around May 10th!

I like Sept/Oct better just because the water is SO much warmer, but there is that nasty risk of hurricanes!

Oh no, I did not know that!! Well thanks for that info....I will just have to move that vacation up to first week of May or preferably, second week of September. Yeah, I knew the water would be better Sept/Oct. Thanks CarolA!:thumbsup2 Jeez, navigating these school sessions is a full time job!.

We just got back last weekend from HHI. It was sunny, clear and 92 all weekend; no crowds, no fuss, tranquil, serene, quiet...no kids!

This was our first trip without our young boys. We invited another couple - we want to make it a yearly tradition...we had the best time.

OK! Today we called MS and booked HHI for 4 nights starting May 9th 2009, (followed by 6 nights at OKW). We decided to err on the side of caution and keep a portion of our trip at OKW - as that's a known for us that we love.

We get to try out HHI and see for ourselves how much we like it. Thank for everyone's input!

I'm sitting here smiling, anticipating your follow-up post that says "Hilton Head was so amazing and we had the best anniversary ever!" Hilton Head tends to do that to people.

I truly think you will be blown away by the property and all it has to offer...unless...unless you are looking for a 5-star resort experience. While HH is wonderful, and one of our favorite DVC properties, it is more on the laid back/relaxing side than upscale/5-star. As long as you go into it knowing that I think your trip will be just as magical as you hope it will be.

We won't be at HHI for our anniversary - so I doubt I will be saying that precisely in a later trip report. As we did a split stay, we're going to be in WDW for our anniversary after checking out of HHI. We know WDW (and their DVC resorts) offer us the fun and magic we want for this event. HHI is an unknown to us. If we sigh our way through HHI, we can always just kick back and know that our WDW DVC resort is right around the corner waiting for us. I like insurance concepts when it comes to event planning. No one likes their major anniversaries or weddings ruined to do lack of backup plans.

The photos I've seen of the rooms at HHI look beautiful. No photos will do the grounds justice at any DVC resort (now that we've seen most of them), so we are going to have to see HHI for ourselves this coming May.

One thing I'd like to get out of our HHI experiece is this: VBR has a martini bar that I love. Is there a nice piano or jazz lounge anywere close in town to HHI that you could recommend? The kind of place you can talk in, not filled with a dance floor. I know the dining in town is supposed to be excellent - and I am hoping that a martini bar, jazz/piano lounge is an option!
