Planning for 2007...already

Yes we are and I can't believe it. We are thinking of doing an II exchange for summertime to Williamsburg, Virginia or somewhere in Maine. Has anyone been there with the II exchange program? Is it hard to get an exchange? How was the resort?

Willaimsburg has a plethora of timeshares. I haven't checked the DVC trade list, so I'm not sure which, if any DVC trades with. I do know they can be rented for a song though, so not sure a DVC trade is worth it.

We go to Williamsburg every summer, Marriott's Manor Club. I believe that is one of DVC's exchanges. Certainly worth the accomodations. It's in a gated retirement/golfing community with miles of paved bike and walking trails. You rent bikes by the day or bring your own. It's a smaller resort but very relaxing. Plus you get free wireless internet if you want to check in back home.

My family owns a week there (after going through an II exchange one year). We usually go in August before my sister's kids have to get back to school. We do several days at the resort, a day in historic Williamsburg, a day at Busch Gardens, perhaps another of the historic sites (Jamestown and Yorktown complete the historic triangle) and/or the water park.

Availability at Marriott can get hard in the summer months though. Owners tend to book early (year in advance) and go. It's far cheaper in the MidAtlantic area to go to Williamsburg than Orlando.

You will learn, if you haven't already, that planning for 2007 is long gone for many people on these boards. To make optimal use of one's points, one needs to plan out approximately two banking/borrowing cycles. In our case, my points usage spreadsheet goes out to at least 2010 to make sure the right points get used at the right time to maximize use of the 11 month window. There is some flexibility in the schedule, but we generally know the pattern of our trips, if not the specific location and exact days.
