Living in NYC I've been all over the Caribbean but have never been to Hawaii. I'm planning a week-long trip and based on my initial research Kauai and the Big Island look the most beautiful to me. Oahu looks... ok? Aulani itself looks stunning, but overall the other islands look more impressive and I probably won't make it back there for many years.

This is all based on an hour or so of research so I'm curious to hear from those that know Hawaii-- is it worth going to Oahu for a "once in a lifetime" trip to Hawaii?

We have been 6 times. Honolulu/Oahu is worth a few days. Never stayed at Aulani, we liked the Waikiki area better for a real ocean view room. Much less $$$, compared to points value. Spent most of our time in Maui and the Big Island, our favorite. I would plan more than a week, and be sure to see more than just 1 island. They are all very different. Have a great trip, Aloha.

I think Oahu is definitely worth a visit. Pearl Harbor and Punchbowl Cemetery for History are excellent sites. My favorite island is Maui in winter for all of the whale siting. There is history, and volcanos and coffee(!) on The Big Island.

We have been to Aulani three times, we have stayed in Honolulu and along the North shore as well. I love Aulani the most on Oahu.

Enjoy wherever you go! I was less impressed with Kauai, but I have limited mobility. The waterfalls there are stunning.

No, not crazy. Oahu has a lot to see but so do the other islands. Pick the islands that have the most appeal to you and enjoy!

We’ve been to the Big Island the most, and it’s our favorite because of the diversity of scenery and things to do. Kauai is my next favorite because it’s gorgeous - so lush! Maui’s nice too, especially if you can do a sunrise bike ride down Haleakala and make the drive to Hana and beyond (especially if you’re like me and had to see Charles Lindbergh’s grave). When we first started traveling to Hawaii in the early 90s, Pearl Harbor was what we did on going-home day between flights from the BI and to home, but now I think we could easily spend two days there, and besides Pearl there’s the Polynesian Cultural Center (if you’re interested in learning about Polynesian culture and history), the Bishop Museum, and the giant waves on the North Shore (we watched the surfers, didn’t join them).

So as others have said, there’s so much to do in Hawaii and the islands are so different from each other that it’s hard to choose just one! But since time is limited, I don’t think it’s wrong to skip Oahu. Kauai and the BI are great choices. Maybe you could fit in a visit to Pearl Harbor, but if not, there’s your reason to return.

Re Aulani: it’s drop-dead gorgeous, and if I ever manage to stay there on points I’d love to do it. Disney (Joe Rohde) did an amazing job making it look Hawaiian - the other resorts near it and on the other islands could be in Miami or in Southern California or any other beach resort in the world. But it’s exceedingly expensive, and for cash isn’t worth it. We just made reservations to stay for the second time at the Marriott down the road, for half the price. We can visit Aulani and eat there if we want, and it’s the same ocean for swimming!

I’d do a few days or a week at aulani, but much prefer Maui to Oahu. Better snorkeling, way less developed and commercial, and I love our two week mellow condo stays.

Not crazy at all! I always say that picking a favorite Hawaiian island is like picking a favorite child. They are all so different and unique and there's something to be said for all of them. However, Oahu is our least favorite island. Yes, I think if you have the time, you should see Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay (just to name a few), but if not, it's ok to skip it. Also while Aulani is a beautiful resort (we were lucky enough to get a CM preview tour right before it opened thanks to my SIL), I much prefer staying on the other side of Diamond Head in the Waikiki area or up at Turtle Bay on the north shore.

We went to Hawaii a couple years ago and went to Kauai. The main reason we didn’t go to Aulani is because we went with family and stayed in one of their timeshare rooms. It was gorgeous and we had a great time, but are planning another trip for 2022 to go to Aulani. Never been, but looks like a lot of fun. Definitely not cheap though! I think whatever you end up doing will be very fun!

Oahu wouldn't be my first choice for an Island either. The thing with Hawaii is that you sort of pick and choose your islands depending on what kind of vacation you want to have. So, no, not nuts at all. I think your choice of islands for a once in a lifetime trip are really good ones - Oahu is a must if your once in a lifetime trip must include Pearl Harbor - and not if it doesn't.

We had a similar decision to make and decided for our first (and quite possibly last) visit to Hawaii we wanted to make sure to see all of the usual and standard things one associates with a trip to Oahu. So Aulani it is and should we decide to make another trip at some point in the future, we'll consider branching out to the other islands. But traveling all that way from the east coast and not seeing Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Wai-ki-ki, the north shore and of course Aulani would seem like an opportunity missed.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Thanks all for the great advice! We decided that since we’re still a few years out from having kids that we’ll do Kauai and Big Island this time with more outdoor/adventure focused activities. Next trip out there with a little one we’ll do a more resort focused trip including Aulani :)

I think that's a very good decision - and once you have a little one, there are enough outdoor/adventure activities on Oahu for you to enjoy while introducing your little one to them!

On Kauai, be sure to take some hikes up in the Waimea Canyon area!
