Planning ahead for 2021

We are going to Disney in May, using our points for the first time. We plan on going approximately every 2 years. We just went in 2017, so I believe we will be waiting until 2021 to go back (for WDW anniversary).

We are using our 2017 & 2018 points for this trip. I just want to verify that I'm correct that we can't bank our 2019 points (October UY) for a trip we would be taking December 2021, right? If we banked our 2019 points, they would need to be used within our Oct 2020-Sept 2021 use year, correct?

For your trip in Dec 2021 you can use points from Oct UYs:
Oct 2020 - Sep 2021 - banked into the next UY
Oct 2021 - Sep 2022 - current UY
Oct 2022 - Sep 2023 - borrowed into the current UY

IMHO, Get a spread sheet that you understand and lay out your points for at least three years for planning purposes.

I understand that. I was more so looking to verify that I wouldn't be able to use 2019 points for a trip after October 2021 (which I was fairly sure about). I'd rather not borrow from future years if I can avoid it.

So my options for my 2019 points are really to rent them out or to schedule my 2021 vacation before the October 2021 use year.

Correct. The 2019 points are currently orphan in your plan.

Points need to be banked during the first 8 months of your UY. Your UY is not a calendar year. Points need to be available during the dates of your stay, not when you make the reservation. Banking moves points one UY forward, borrowing moves points one UY back. Banking and borrowing are final transactions and can not be reversed.

You will always run the risk of losing points if your vacation gets canceled and you can't rent out the banked points.
