DH & I have a contract with 190 points remaining, with an October 1 Use Year. We are thinking of using some of those points to plan a September long-weekend trip, maybe over Labor Day weekend.

Thinking ahead, with life being unpredictable as it is at times, if something happened where I could not take the September trip, what would happen to those points? Would I be required to use them before October 1? Would they go into the 60 day holding acocunt, even though the 60 days would then be into the next Use Year? Would I just lose them?

My other alternative is to bank the 190 points now, borrow points from the 2006 Use Year to take the September trip, and then use the 190 banked points for our January 2007 Marathon trip, which usually ends up being a week at WDW, with 4 or 5 nights in a GV.

Thoughts, other ideas, suggestions?????

Dear DD:

I don't follow your bank/borrow plan. If you borrow 2006UY points they permanently become 2005 points with the same expiration/holding limitations as 'real' 2005 UY points.

The holding account would end on 9/30. Borrowing wouldn't help the situation, I think it could hurt because if you decide like in June not to go, you would not be able to bank those points like you could if you used current year.

The Holding Account would only be used if you had to cancel within 30 days of arrival ... and you would have to use those points for a reservation before September 30. The Holding Account would not extend the use of the points.

As already noted, borrowing from the following Use Year would not change the outcome of the situation you describe.

Your question is an example of the advantage of having a Use Year that starts just prior to when you will use the points. In this case, a September Use Year wouldn't be any problem at all since you'd still have 11 more months to use those points.

Thanks all. I forgot about the holding account within 30 days thing.

I guess I'll have to plan it and hope nobody gets sick or anything!!!!

Also remember that that is a prime rental time as well so you might be able to unload them that way as well .At least it wouldn't be a total lost. :teacher:

We're in the same situation with a triip we are taking in June. Our use year is in August. We normally do not travel this time of year but we did promise our children a birthday trip as their birthdates are within a week of each other. Having at least one past trip cancelled due to medical reasons, I'm hoping and praying nothing happens. In the event that it does, I plan on putting our reservation up for rent. If it's really close to the trip start date, then I'll contact relatives in Florida and offer an impromtu vacation or put the points in a hold and try to have someone use them by July 31.
