Planning a 7 day western...

Has anyone gone "off the beaten' path" and done any non-sanctioned excursions?
I mean, if you know what to do, can you just get a taxi or rental car and just buzz on over to whatever you want?
I have also seen some other excursions at other Cruise lines that look a little better than what DCL has to offer. Can you or how can you get access to those excursions?

Once you get off the ship you can plan and do anything you would like to as long as you are back in time!! And all the excursions are very aware of the importance of that fact.

We did a 3 stop snorkel tour and the turtle farm on our own last May and it was great. We used the local taxi/bus to get around. The 3 stop tour was operated by bob soto and it included a visit to stingray city. It was excellent even with our younger kids - ds8 and dd4. The turtle farm was worth it for the kids too. Doing it this was we got to see more and it costs a lot less. The thee stop snorkel was $35/pp including gear for 1/2 day of snorkeling...

We did Mr. Sanchos beach in Cozumel on our own via taxi. Very nice, no admission fee, water trampoline, clean bathrooms, small pool for kiddies, thatched umbrellas with chairs, good food and drinks!!!

We printed out the coupon at the site and received a free Margarita with any food purchase ordered....we ordered the nachos and they were delicious!!! Here are some pics from our trip.
