Okay, I hope this is the right place to ask this- and I hope I can make my question clear.

We hope to buy into DVC sometime in the relatively near future. We go to California every year or so, so we know that needs to be our home base. I think I read somewhere that if you already owned DVC, you would get priority in buying at CA. Is that right?

If so, we were considering buying a small amount at BWV-like about 50-75 points through resale. We don't go to Florida very often. We would then buy points ( probably 160) when CA comes up for sale. We could then use our 160 points at 11 months out and then at 7 months we could extend our stay a day or 2 if we still have our BWV points and something is available. Right?

Also, we would usually go in March to CA. When would we want our use year ( did I call that the right thing) to be?

First buying priority goes to those who buy directly from Disney (not resale) through the DVC office at Disneyland. These folks are called Disneyland Founding Members and they will have first priority to buy (160 points maximum) once GCV is announced. Second priority goes to all other DVC owners, no matter how they bought. And, finally sales will be open to the general public. The Founding Member paperwork says they get 90 days priority over the general public, but it does not say at what point the other DVC owners will be allowed to buy.

Based upon this, the small (50-75 point) contract you are considering buying will only get you second priority. However, you are correct about how it could be used in conjunction with your GCV points. The only way to get first priority is to buy directly from Disney at Disneyland; and, while you could buy any resort, you will be subject to the 100/160 point minimums and you may have to waitlist for any resort not currently being sold.

As for use year, you are using the correct term, however, it is something I understand but do not place much importance in, and therefore I will leave that to someone else to explain.

We just went through this same decision making process with the same goal in mind last week in order to be able to buy at VGC. Only we bought at AKV for 100 points. We do plan to travel to WDW now and then. There are also other options we see for using those points, one of which you mentioned - the 7th month extension.. I did ask my guide whether it HAD to be AKV that we bought to get Founding Member's status. She said YES - that the other resorts didn't apply. Luckily AKV was in our top 2 DVC resorts anyway and so I didn't push this since I'm very happy with AKV. But I'm not sure she was being entirely truthful. Also, now with BLT on sale soon you could also have that as an option . . . I was not interested in BLT b/c I want to spend my extra $$$ on VGC. Also my personal Magic Kingdom is in Anaheim, not Lake Buena Vista. ;)

Anyway one thing I've learned in this process is do not necessarily take your guide tells you at face value. You have to push a little sometimes.

Also, I've been debating our options for six months and have seen some reasonable arguments that VGC will make it to the general public. Thing is, not everyone in the general public who wants to buy would be able to do it. But I think that being able to purchase as a regular DVC member should be doable. We weren't willing to take the risk though. I just don't see them building another DVC at DLR within the next 5-7 years for various reasons. Also since we were happy with AKV anyway and there were incentives to boot, we were good to go. :thumbsup2
