Hi
I have copied and posted this here as I did not get any response in the other forum..
We are spending 3 nights outside Anaheim (wanting to) before we go to our house rental near Disneyland. We will be flying into LAX. Looking for a place not far from the beach so we can spend some time going there, maybe Queen Mary tour, Catalina Island, or any other ideas? Any nice places to stay that have airport shuttle or not too expensive to cab it? We are open to anything within reason Just thought we could do some other exploring or touristy stuff before our 10 days in Anaheim. Thanks

Here's a permanent links with some ideas :

Since I'm a local I can't help much with hotels. The Queen Mary itself is a hotel though - that might be fun ( probably pricey though ). Long Beach has a really good aquarium near the Queen Mary. Lots of folks like to go to Hollywood - I recommend Griffith Observatory for the view of LA, then drive down to Hollywood and see the stars on the walk of fame and the El Capitan for a Disney movie ( across the street from the Chinese Theater).

Depending where you are from you may like to watch surfers or go to Venice beech. I'd also recommend Hollywood Blvd. They are just a couple interesting and free places to visit and have a draw that applies to most people since they are well depicted in film.

If you're up for going to LA, the LA Farmers Market at 3rd & Fairfax has a good variety of food stalls and yummy food options. The Farmers Market is located near a shopping complex called The Grove, where there's tons of shopping. This area is right next to Museum Row and Miracle Mile, where you can go to Hollywood & Vine (Kodak Theater and the Chinese Theater) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art or there's also a car museum. The Museum itself is only a 20 minute drive (no traffic) up the 10 Freeway to Santa Monica Pier, which has near Malibu. From Malibu, you can get to either Getty Center up by UCLA or go to the Getty Museum in Malibu. For the Malibu location, you need advance (free) tickets. HTH!

No one including Mary Jo's thread discusses the La Brea Tar Pits. Totally worth it!

Is there a bus tour or easy transit from Anaheim/Disneyland area to the La Brea tar pits? My kids would love to go see this in July!

I have no idea. I would be surprised if there is anything more than public bus lines which would take forever. Good luck! :)

LA is probably the number one place in the world where you need a car.

I would highly recommend the Newport Beach or Manhatten Beach area. Easy access up & down the coast around LA. Hotwire has great deals on nice 3&4 star hotels.
