Places that exceeded your expectations and places that were let downs

That's a hard question because even if we weren't thrilled with somewhere, we could usually find something we enjoyed. We try to experience everything at least once.

Exceeded might be:
Nomad Lounge and Tiffins - I knew they were going to be good but Nomad Lounge has probably become one of our favorite places on property. Just so comfortable, the drinks and food are good and the service great. Tiffins - the food was excellent, the service excellent and the price not bad.

Skipper's Canteen - we love different and this hit the spot for us. While the food wasn't the best we ever had, it was pretty good and the service was as well.

Sci-Fi - this was one we went into not expecting to like but we were hungry, it was lunch time so we took at chance on a walk up. We were put on the wait list and actually got in before a lot of people with ADRs. There were 3 adults and we sat in the back at one of the 4 top long tables, which was perfect for us since had we been put in a car we wouldn't have been able to sit together. I loved the old clips, the food was decent, not something you'd write home about but not bad and our server was great. We probably won't go back again, but it was much better than we expected.

Let Down:
Poor ole AKL gets two of our all time top let downs. Sanaa - again 3 of us, it was a spur of the moment decision, we checked into AKL and were walking around waiting for our room and noticed the sign. I'd read how good it was so we walked over to concierge and made ADRs for the next night, fairly late in the evening maybe about 8 or 8:30. It took us over 2 hours to eat, not because we were enjoying it so much but because our server was just so bad, we actually watched one table turn over twice while we were there. We had to wait between each course, including when we were done and waiting to receive our bill then waiting to pay it. The food was just so so for us, as a matter of fact, I was the only person to eat more than half mine, my son and then DIL didn't even eat that much. They were excited about it when we booked it because they lived in the Chicago area at the time and had a favorite Indian/African type restaurant they ate at all the time. My son even had to send a drink back, which is unheard of. A later trip, my son and I decided to try Jikos, again because I had read so much about it. We arrived early and sat a the bar and enjoyed a drink and bread service, by far the highlight of the meal. We only got an entre each and each got a wine flight and it was almost $200. My son had the smallest filet on the menu and only ate half, it was overdone and he said just o.k. I got fish and it was just o.k. We thought by ordering two different wine flights, one red and one white we would get to sample different wines, turns out they had 3 wines but each one had two of the same wines, the only difference being one had a white and one a red that was not the same.

Flying Fish - again sat at the bar first and really enjoyed that. Our problem here was our server, he was just so slow. The food was o.k., and the price was reasonable but after we were done we were just so frustrated with the service it spoiled it.

Exceeded:

*Mama Melrose - F! Pkg. Really surprised how good our food was. Best steak ever.

*Wolfgang Puck Express Mkt Pl- Great food, can't believe it's a Quick Service credit.

*TREX- Good food and great service (except for one time).

*1900 PF breakfast- Good food and service. Excelllent character interactions.

Let Down:

*CRT- Had the unfortunate luck of a really bad server (snarky, uninterested, slow). Food was good, but we were really there for the experience since we were celebrating DD bday.

*Any place that sells dole whips- Wanted to love them and thought I would after hearing about them for years. Didn't happen.

This is a fascinating thread..........so much information! I love it! There are many thoughts I agree with but others I don't, or at least our experience was the total opposite. I guess that's kind of expected :)

So......................

Exceeded Expectations :D
California Grill (dinner)
Tusker House (breakfast)
Saanna (lunch)
Trattoria al Forno

Let Down o_O
Hollywood and Vine (any)
Coral Reef (tried it again 10 years later.......and still underwhelmed)
Sci Fi (lunch)

Doug :goofy:

EXCEEDED:
Pinocchio Village Haus: The chicken parm pasta is amazing and we constantly talk about how great is was.

Via Napoli: The food was good. We own a pizza shop that mirrors this so it was familIar. The reason it exceeds is because of the cast members and wait staff. My 2.5 year old cousin threw a glass plate and it shattered. They were very calm, cleaned up the plate, and continued with their day as if nothing happened.

LET DOWN:
Be Our Guest (breakfast): We somehow got a prepark opening breakfast reservation about 10 days before we arrived. The food was cold and bland. On the plus side we didn't pay (restaurant error) and we got to be in MK early

Exceeded:
Tusker House Breakfast- really only chose TH for a cute character experience before a day at AK, but I ended up enjoying the food more than any other breakfast I had that trip!
Akershus Breakfast- See TH. Wasn't expecting to actually enjoy the food, but two plates of cheesy potatoes later and here we are.
Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie Lunch/Snacks- I ran in here one day during my CP because I was dying and needed something to eat and it became one of the restaurants I ate most at during my program
Kona Cafe Dinner- My family ended up arriving at the Poly at around 9-10 in the evening and wanted to sit down somewhere. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and all of our meals were great.

Let Downs:
Trails End Dinner/Breakfast- Lackluster food and slow service both meals
Gasparilla's Grill- Incredibly limited menu and the food was just gross, hated going here for breakfast and lunch during my 2014 trip
Liberty Tree Tavern- LOVED LTT when I went in 2014. Returned this past January for the first time since the rehaul and I miss the old menu... and the old souvenir mugs with Mickey, Goofy, and Donald as founding fathers!

Exceeded: Captain's Grille breakfast; delicious! Fabulous waiter, too.

BOG lunch in dark rose room. Cool, quiet break from park. Loved the room.

Let down: Paddlefish dinner. Cold food. Over cooked food. But - ambience was nice, second floor was quiet (good thing).

Kona cafe, breakfast and dinner. Waiter on a script, just going through moves. Food average.

Exceeded-Nine Dragons. Because of so many negative reviews, our expectation was very low, but it was good/not outstanding, but quite enjoyable.
Let down-Kona cafe for lunch. Nothing was very good, but the final blow was dessert. They kept telling us it had to be made fresh, but after about 15 minutes waiting, they then decided they wouldn't make it. No explanation, no "We're sorry".

Fun!

Met/Exceeded:

Exceeded:

50's Prime Time. I thought the food was great and our server was very funny and really into her role.
Le Cellier. I thought it was amazing the first time I went, but this time was even better. YUM!
Garden Grill Bfast. It was delicious, quickly sat, great server, awesome characters.
Liberty Tree Tavern Lunch. WAY exceeded. Everything was delicious and our server was so nice and attentive.
San Angel Inn. I hadn't heard great things, but I wanted to eat at it anyway, and it was very good and the restaurant was very neat inside.
Raglan Road Dinner. We knew it would be fun and delicious going in, but this time was amazing. Great service, we were RIGHT under the stage, loads of music and dancing, and my kids went up on stage and river danced. Can't beat that! Was probably the highlight of the trip as far as eating goes.

Met:

CA Grill Dinner. It was delicious, but it didn't exceed what I had been reading. It was wonderful though!
CRT Dinner. Didn't know the princesses aren't out all through dinner, but they were great and the food was good. They didn't come out until we already had our food and we had to wait for the last one to come around.
CP Bfast. We really love this place and it was just as good as it was the last time we were there. Very fun!
'Ohana Bfast. It was just fine, but I don't think it's on our must-do list.
Via Napoli Dinner. The pizza was fine, but we were stuck out on this porch type area (lackluster environment) and our server kept forgetting about us. Will definitely try it again though.

Let Down:

Chef Mickey's Dinner. I don't understand why it can't be as good as any other buffet. Just because you have the main characters means you can serve me off-brand ranch from a bottle? Nope, never again.
Coral Reef Lunch. The food was really good, but we had an early lunch ADR and the restaurant was empty. I specifically requested a booth in the front, and they seated us in the very back. ??? Won't go back, couldn't see any fish!
Boma Bfast. Not going to make a special trip to AKL for it, but if we stay there again we might try again, but my husband got sick from the carved ham, so yeah. Quite a bad thing on vaca.
La Hacienda. This was a few years ago, but everything was cold, like it had been sitting there for a while before we got it. It was very meh. But the view is nice.
BOG Bfast and Lunch. Just eh. I had an 8:05 ADR for bfast, making sure to get a seat in the ballroom or the West Wing and we still had to scramble up a table in the library, which just isn't the same. I'll try for dinner, but not bfast or lunch anymore. And I preordered and it still took forever to get our bfast!
Kona Lunch. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but nothing was very good. My kids wouldn't even eat the pasta, and I've never seen them NOT eat pasta.

Exceeded:
Splitsville - the sushi is fantastic, the service is top notch, and the drinks are huge and cold :)

Nine Dragons - never went b/c "Chinese"...I can get that at home, for cheap. But, needed a respite from the heat last trip, they had plenty of walk-up availability. It was the best meal of the trip, and I have an ADR for next trip! Definitely NOT the Chinese like home.

Trails End - so comforting, service is great, location is fun, and price is more than reasonable.

Boma and Sanaa are always top notch, as is Biergarten.

Via Napoli was awesome - so happy to find a place to put arugula on my pizza!

And, finally, Sci-Fi!

Let Downs:

Chefs - blech.

La Hacienda - rude service, crammed tables

BOG - breakfast. Food decent, atmosphere was very cafeteria. Lame.

The Wave - date night. Food tasted canned. My dish with "fresh tomato sauce" tasted like Chef Boyardee. blech.

I will limit this to new (to me) restaurants I tried on my most recent trip.

Exceeded - Trattoria al Forno. I contemplated dining there my last three trips, but talked myself out of it. The service was excellent and the food was great. I'll definitely eat there again.

Let Down - Skipper Canteen. What a wasted opportunity! The restaurant was themed well, but the cast members were phoning it in. When they said something that was supposed to be funny, they sounded like they were reading it directly from a script. I wouldn't have minded this is the food wasn't so bad.

I wanted to write mine before I read everyone else's so I wasn't influenced. If anything is redundant I am sorry:

Exceeded:
Rose & Crown - Stayed away for multiple reasons for my entire Disney existence, but my whole party was SO happy with our entire meal, service and table when we finally did go for the 1st the time about 4 years ago. Been happy with it ever since.

Artist Point
- It is my favorite restaurant in WDW, incredible food & service in a relaxed atmosphere. I never expected it to be as amazing as it is!

Hoop Dee Doo
- I had been several times as a child but upon returning in 2015 I was blown away by the show...it was SO good! The food wasn't all that amazing but I didn't expect it to be. The show truly had me belly laughing and reliving everything I felt as a child, totally exceeded everything I expected :)

Splitsville
- I stopped here late night for a bite w/my aunt and it was such a memorable meal! I know most talk about the sushi I believe but I had an amazing burger & beer out on the patio by the heat lamps on a breezy night and it was awesome! Out of all the places we could have picked I didn't think I would remember this meal, but I totally do and would recommend eating there to anyone.

Akershus - Errr whatever its official name used to be a decade ago  I had waited my whole life to eat at the "country with the grass on the roof" and finally my cousin and friends treated me to a dinner a Akershus and it waaay exceeded anything I could have imagined! The food was unique, delicious and back then you were practically dining in the gorgeous building alone...dilled herring and blood sausage on waffles weren't for everyone:lmao:

Let Downs:
Chef Mickey's - I had heard about CM's for such a long time and last visit we were staying at BLT so we finally went. The food was fine, classic breakfast buffet, but I was so disappointed that Chef Mickey's was in fact just "those tables behind the sign". Meaning, what I can see from the monorail is in fact the restaurant...I had kind of hoped that for the ticket price there was something more...nope...oh well, we went once and the characters were great, but I was disappointed.

Tony's - I don't think I need to say much. It was a longtime favorite, but after my last visit in 2014 I was so let down I could cry. Bad food, bad service, bad Tony, bad bad Tony!

Exceeded:
Ohana- This place gets lots of mixed reviews but we really loved it.

Chef Mickeys- Althought the food was just okay. The character interaction was soooo good the night we were there!

Hollywood & Vine breakfast- My husband loved this meal so much it's the only thing he requested for our trip in Nov.

Let Down's:
Akershus- The food was just really not good at all! The princess were great and maybe lunch/ dinner is better than breakfast.

TRex- By far our worst meal, thank goodness my 6 year old loved the dinosaurs and we did the build your own Dino which added to the experience. But the food was really bad, I mean like the kids meal was the best thing on the table bad.

Can't really say that they exceeded but after listening to the reviews for Coral Reef and San Angel Inn, I'm surprised that I enjoyed both so much.

My only let down was Le Cellier, but I think that was based on having eaten too soon before going in so I wasn't very hungry.

Kringla Bakery - It became one of my absolute favorite QS in WS after I tried the club sandwich, school bread & more recently the meatballs. Everything I've tried has been very good & a better quality for the price than most QS in WDW.

Let downs:

Geyser Point Bar & Grill - I was really looking forward to the cheesy brisket I'd read about that looked so good & had good reviews. I was there around 3:30ish one hot afternoon but my brisket came out with cold, hard 'melted' cheese on top & below that was nothing more than canned hash style meat. Sorry, not good for the price at all. But the drink was good & I did have good, friendly service that day so I will give this another try in the future.

This! We tucked into Kringla unplanned and thought, "Are all CS places this good?" The ham and apple sandwich - absolutely delicious. And school bread did not disappoint. My kids are still talking about the troll horns. :) Geyser Point was a similarly unplanned visit with the exact opposite experience - yuck.

HDDR always! We've done it six years in a row and it never disappoints!

Another place that exceeded my expectations was Trattoria! After reading mixed / bad reviews when it opened we decided to give it a try anyways & LOVED it! Done it 2 years in a row. Last year they made us feel so special on our Honeymoon / it was incredible... Champagne with strawberries, a delicious dessert platter with our names written in chocolate, a menu with happily ever after & our wedding date written. Our service has always been incredible both years and the food is fantastic!!!

Let down for us was Le Cellier for sure. My hubby was super excited to try it and did not enjoy the food at all. Trying Shula's this summer for a good steak!

Exceeded:

HDDR: I was worried to try this. Being it's sort of out of the way and a dinner show. However, it was awesome! Service and food was great and the show was SO funny! We loved it!

Tusker House for breakfast, we do this everytime.

Boma (prefer the breakfast here, but dinner is good as well *zebra domes*)

'Ohana- I know this is mixed, but we love it.

Sunshine Season's- we were incredibly impressed on our last trip when we made a stop here. The food was really good for QS.

Let Down:

CRT: Food isn't great IMO. Once and done experience.

Hollywood and Vine: We've had Bfast here and it was ok. Dinner was a nightmare! The food was yuck and the service was terrible! NEVER again!

Tony's: We did this on our first trip to WDW the night of MNSSHP, a total disaster. Food and service were TERRIBLE. This is our worst dining experience.

Chef Mickey's

La Hacienda- I expected it to be way better than it was. Service was good but the food wasn't and the tables are crammed!

Exceeded:
Captain's Grill-everything we ordered was fantastic and the service was great.
'Ohana breakfast-YUM! Great character interaction
San Angel Inn-everyone loved their food even my kids who were very young at the time
Via Napoli-only had apps but they were great and we went without an ADR and our party of 7 was seated immediately
Raglan Road-great food, fun atmosphere
Fultons Crabhouse-Two fantastic dinners, so sad they are no more
1900 Park Fare Breakfast-Outstanding character interaction, great food for a buffet
Cinderella's Royal Table Lunch-really good food and good character interaction
Chefs de France-yummy appetizers, was surprised with Remy even though we were an adult only table
Crews Cup-Delicious lobster roll, wonderful service, great ambiance
Olivia's-Thanksgiving dinner many moons ago was wonderful, very sweet server
Tangierine Cafe-Fantastic Schwarma platter
Tony's-Certainly not as bad as everyone makes it out to be
Akerhaus Lunch-Our meals were so good and the princesses were very sweet and took their time
HDDR-Food was way better than expected and the show is fantastic

Met:
Be Our Guest-meals were good, beautiful atmosphere, but didn't knock our socks off
'Ohana dinner-food was decent enough, service was slow and we were seated right in front of the server's window
Cape May Cafe Dinner-decent food, I didn't eat enough to get my money's worth out of a buffet
Crystal Palace-ok food, decent enough character interaction
Kona Dinner-good food, service not the greatest
Big River Brewing-ok experience
Be Our Guest Lunch-Decent enough
T-Rex-Decent enough food, fun atmosphere
Flame Tree BBQ-Good food, chaotic seating

Disappoints:
Tucker House Breakfast-We had a late ADR, they were switching over to lunch. The breakfast food was dried out and the character interaction was rushed
Sci-Fi-disgusting food and horrible service
Whispering Canyon Cafe-Piles of greasy meat and cold sides, blech

What did you & your family have at Geyser Point? I was thinking about maybe trying the salmon dip (I think that's what it is?) next time around.

What did you & your family have at Geyser Point? I was thinking about maybe trying the salmon dip (I think that's what it is?) next time around.

I had the crab cake sandwich and DH had the bison cheeseburger. Kids had cheeseburgers, too. TBH it all tasted like it had been frozen and unlovingly reheated. I wouldn't have even mentioned getting a bad sandwich, but this place is brand new and it was reaaallly bad. A total shock to us. We've enjoyed Artist Point in the past and (also having lived in the Pacific Northwest) we know that resort can do a good job with that cuisine. Maybe they're still getting their sea legs.

I adore WL so I don't like saying negative things about that wonderful place. I should have added that my cocktail - a huckleberry something (lemonade or punch?) - was super yummy.
