I’m looking at booking a short notice (73 days out) cruise with a FL resident discount. I have a placeholder not attached to a reservation yet but I know I can’t use it with the FL discount, and the FL discount is better in this case. So can I just leave my placeholder floating out there in space now and take a cruise not using it? Also, can I book a second placeholder while on this next cruise, and then I will have two different future cruise to book with placeholders?

Yes, yes.

Yes, you do not need to use a placeholder if you don’t want to. Just be aware that if you don’t book a cruise that departs within 2 years of when the placeholder was booked, the placeholder will automatically cancel at the 2 year mark. Your deposit would then be refunded — I would guess to the original payment method, since mine went back on my credit card.

Yes, you can book another placeholder if you take another cruise. I did that on a cruise in July 2017 after booking a placeholder on a cruise in February 2017, because I knew I wanted to book a Med cruise for June 2019. When summer 2019 dates were released, I booked using the later placeholder, knowing the earlier one would expire in February 2019. I didn't end up booking a cruise using the first placeholder, and noticed a $250 credit from DCL on my February credit card statement. (It took me a few days to figured out that it was the cancelled placeholder rather than a port-fee adjustment for the upcoming June cruise.)

You can book a placeholder on every cruise. I ended up with 4 placeholders at one time. I always book one because you never know if you might want to use one. I have one that expires in Dec. of this year and I really didn't think I would end up using it. Then I found that the Sept. transatlantic cruise would work for us and was very glad that I had that placeholder.

high-jacking a bit here, but remind me... I have two staterooms booked on our upcoming cruise. Can I book two staterooms on a future cruise AND one (or two??) placeholders?

Each household may book either a placeholder or a future cruise, not both. If your 2 staterooms have just your immediate family (parents and children spread across 2 rooms), you may book a placeholder or a future cruise. If you/family are in 1 stateroom and grandparents in the other, and you do not all live at the same address, then each can book either a placeholder or a future cruise. (note that booking a future cruise allows up to 2 staterooms on 1 cruise date)

Enjoy your cruise!

Okay, yeah...just one household so it’s just the future cruise w/ 2 staterooms. I forgot and then got into wishful thinking!

We just had 2 staterooms on the magic. Husband and myself in one. 23 and 19 year old son’s in the other. I tried to book 2 cabins for us on a may 2020 cruise and an October 2019 cruise for my husband and myself.

Told I could only book 2 cruises total since we all had the same address. CM told me to change my son’s address on file to his actual address for the next cruise and I could book an additional 2 cruises.

While I would never disagree with our esteemed moderator, I will say that on our first cruise (before we knew what the heck we were doing), we had two inside connecting staterooms with myself listed in one with one DS and my DW listed in the other with our other DS. They let us make two placeholder reservations. Now we ended up only using one of them (we actually thought at the time that if we booked two connecting staterooms again that we'd need two placeholders; since we got a verandah it was a moot point) and DCL transferred the deposit from the 2nd placeholder as part of the down payment on the new reservation. So either the policy has changed, or the onboard booking person made a mistake. (Maybe they get a bonus for a certain number of placeholders sold and was willing to look the other way to meet his quota!!)

Even two people in the same room with different addresses can book 2 placeholders each, right? But who do you put as lead on the second placeholder?

Yes, if multiple households in the same cabin, you may book either two cabins on the same future cruise or two placeholders for cabins on the same future cruise for each household (the cabins for each household have to be on the same cruise, but each household can be on different cruises from the other households). Whomever you put as the lead guest on each cabin/placeholder must be sailing on the future cruise that you book, but the second cabin lead guest does not have to be on the sailing that you book the future cruise or placeholder on. Make sure that you have the full names, birthdates, and addresses of the guests you are listing on your future cruise or placeholder.

They let us make two placeholder reservations.

Since 1 placeholder = 1 stateroom, they do allow 2 placeholders to be booked with the expectation that both will be used on the same cruise. I'm not sure how well that is enforced... They do not allow 2 different cruises to be booked.

Do you mean you could only book 2 staterooms for the same future cruise? That's true. Each household may book up to 2 staterooms for 1 future cruise date. (or 2 placeholders which is the equivalent)

If your adult son officially had a different address, yes, he could book another 2 staterooms on a different future cruise date than what you booked.

Sometimes the future cruise desk will still allow you to book a second cruise date but it won't receive full OBB benefits.

Here is a quick overview of the rules around booking on-board with full OBB benefits:

While on board, each adult sailing with a unique address can:
* Book a max of two (2) rooms on one specific future cruise
OR
* Book of max of two (2) rooms on one future unknown cruise (a.k.a. placeholder)

Remarks:
1. The adult making the booking must also be a guest in that booking.
2. The second room booked will need its own 'unique' adult - i.e. someone else not already sailing on that cruise.

2. The second room booked will need its own 'unique' adult - i.e. someone else not already sailing on that cruise.
It can be someone who is also on the cruise, but not the same person. DH and I get 2 placeholders and we are each on one.

By 'that cruise', I mean 'that future cruise'. So, you can put any other adult's name on that second placeholder room, but when you convert it to an actual sailing, the system will ask you to change the guest name if it sees them as already booked on that sailing (such as your parents).

You can still get the onbaord credit with your placeholder, just not the % off the room rate. I would use the placeholder and then book a new one once on board, giving you a fresh 2 year window. That is if you don't have need to have to place holders.

I am looking forward to seeing how this works out. DH and I (same address) are in separate staterooms this cruise. My hope is to book a total of 4 placeholders. More than likely these will all be used on one future cruise. But the hope is that DH can book a set of two placeholders, one in his name and one in, say MIL's name... then I can book one in my name and one in my mom's name.

It does not matter if you the guests are in different cabins, if they have the same household address, they are limited to either receiving onboard booking benefits on a total of up-to-2 cabins on the same future cruise or through a total of up-to-2 placeholders good for single cabins on the same future cruise.
