Hello,

I have never booked a placeholder so have a question with regards to Hawaii cruises.

If I book a placeholder on our upcoming 4 night cruise, can I transfer the placeholder to a Hawaii cruise if one comes up online? If I have to call in, they’re usually gone before you can make the call.

Thanks!

“Placeholders” can only be converted by phone.

If only by phone, would I be able to snag a Hawaii cruise online, and then call them and have it moved over?

Pretty sure the certificates have to be used on a new booking. You can reshop a booked cruise on board, but the certificates are new bookings only I believe.

Placeholders can only be used for new bookings and can only be made by calling DCL (either you, or your TA if you have placeholder with one). So, if you have already either booked or held a cabin on the Hawaii sailings, you cannot apply the placeholder to it. If you attempt to hold a cabin via an internet hold or booking, it will be out of inventory for the DCL phone rep when they attempt to book with your placeholder.

If you book online and then get them on the phone with the placeholders ready, you can have them cancel your existing booking and immediately book anew with the placeholder - obviously, hoping that no one else snags it in that split moment.

The problem with the Hawaii cruises is that they are sold out, so the reps can't see what to book. It is entirely possible that if you snagged a GTD room, the system might not put it back into inventory in the same way (or at all) upon cancellation.

If you convert the Placeholder to a real date (like an old “dummy booking”) you MAY be able to change it online if a Hawaii Cruise pops up. But not if Hawaii gets posted as a *GT - though unless there is a rash of cancellations, there may not be any *GT offered. Regular GTY can be booked with an OBB/Placeholder.

If you do convert to a real date with intent to change it - make note of the PIF date and be sure to change or cancel by then or you’ll lose the deposit.

Enjoy your cruise!

Cancelled bookings or holds do not go immediately back into the system, and it can take up to hours for those cabins to be reflected back in inventory.

Maybe if you do it online - but we have always been able to get it done with the rep on the phone.

There is also the possibility that on your upcoming cruise you could just book Hawaii. I just looked and there are inside, oceanview, and veranda cabins available on the 10 night cruise out of Honolulu.

Yes because thats what i did. But it is correct that it needs to be done by phone. The agent said there is a possibility that they would not be able to swap it correctly if it releases. I told them it was a popular cruise and by the time i got on the phone it would be gone. Luckily it worked out.
