Place to stay

[Rugrats love Disney]

Planning vacation in July to Disneyland, can anyone suggest a decent place to stay? Relatives want something 100-ish...from what I am finding on the internet some of the reviews scare me. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

A lot of experienced Disney veterans will recommend the Candy Cane Inn. I haven't stayed there, so I can't recommend it, but I would stay there based on the recommendations from this board.

We went last year for the first time as a family. (Last time dh and I went, we were kids, going with our families). We stayed at the Tropicana. It is right at the crosswalk to Disneyland, and exactly what we needed, as a budget-conscious family of 4. Nothing fancy, but a clean room, complete with shower/tub, mini-fridge, and The Disney Channel. Oh, and the 2 Queen size beds were handy, too. LOL And with our kids being preschoolers, the location makes it perfect to get back to the room for a nap. It's also very close to McDonald's, too.
We are staying there again this year. We are staying there the week of 7/30-8/5, and we were quoted $139 per night. I booked through AAA, though, which gave us something like 10% off that.

Disney hotels will probably be considerably more than that, especially in July.

There are cheaper non-Disney hotels, and two that receive high reviews here and on tripadvisor.com, are the Howard Johnson and the Candy Cane Inn, which are both 10 minutes walk away.

Thanks for the info... I almost forgot about the Tropicana- I will check that one out. I have seen that quite a few people have recommended the Candy Cane- could get expedia to give me rooms there but found someone that had the actual hotel website- rooms are still available...
I have been to the travel guide website- already have shot down one hotel suggestion made by a relative thanks to that site!!!- price was right but reviews were SCARY!!!! Thank goodness for sites like these- wonder what they did before chat boards? hahaha!!

I agree with the Candy Cane as well. We actually got a cheaper rate dealing through the actual hotel website than places like Orbitz. The place is cute, the continental breakfast isn't bad, and the staff is friendly. Free bus shuttle as well if you don't want to walk.

I'd agree with the Candy Cane Inn suggestion. We got it for $92 using our AAA card and calling the hotel directly.

When we went last year and stayed at Anaheim Plaza hotel. Their family suites (sleeps 6) were running about $150, but what they are are two connecting rooms, one with a fridge and micro, two full baths. They're located right across the street and down a bit, but not as far down as Katella. Easy easy walking distance. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, the kids loved the pool (and it wasn't too cold, like some of them are). Not alot of bells and whistles but we really liked it and would probably go back, as it's nice to have the separate sleeping space.

Another vote for the Candy Cane. We stayed there last month and I will be staying again next month. We have stayed at a lot of hotels in the area over the years. The candy cane is the first one that I would really recomend and with out question stay at again.

Other great choices are Hojo's (howard johnson) and Fairfield inn. However, they are about the same price as CCI, and dont offer free breakfast or the shuttle. The regular rooms at CCI are a bit small, so I would go with the deluxe for the few extra $$ if they have it available.

When our family and friends stayed at the Candy Cane Inn recently we had 6 rooms, all regular. Two of our rooms were the smaller ones and the rest were roomy. We just arranged it so the two families of two people had the smaller rooms so it didn't matter to us. I don't know if it would help but it can't hurt to ask for a larger regular room...

We've stayed a bunch on Harbour Blvd. The Carousel is our favorite of those. We've also stayed at the Desert Inn several times. All our experience with Harbour Blvd. is decent rooms, nothing special but all very acceptable as a hotel room. Not places to want to hang out in the rooms or on the grounds but great (cheap and close) for park commando trips. Rates for prime times do go up substantially.

We just got back from a stay at the Holiday Inn Express on Katella. It was $105/nt and I would recommend it. The property is well kept and up-to-date. Breakfast is included. It is not much farther than the Candy Cane, but does not have the shuttle. I made my reservations too late and could not get into the CCI. It did look nice and I would consider trying it next time, but HIE is a good alternative.

Wow! Thanks for the great tips! I am finding that I have more luck going out to the actual hotel websites than orbitz or expedia- those sights don't believe in more than 4 people to a family for one room- We have 5 in our family (12, 8, & 5 -going on 26!) and prefer everyone to be in the same room- not same beds! Had very bad experience at Ramada Inn in Laughlin, NV last year- wanted to give us two- non adjoining rooms for the night even though our reservations were very clear that we wanted adjoining and even called the day of arrival to confirm. Trying to avoid that nightmare this years vacation!

I know someone briefly mentioned it, but Anaheim Desert Inn & Suites has 2-bedroom suites (one main entrance -- not adjoining rooms) for around your price range. They are directly across the street from DLR. They've received decent reviews here on the board. I'm leaning towards them because I like my girls to sleep in a separate bedroom (but like you, don't want them in a separate unit altogether!). We loved the Tropicana. We stayed there in February for five nights and were in love with that location. Nice, clean, recently remodeled rooms. Great staff. Okay pool area but again the location was just fantastic! I would stay there again in a heartbeat.
