We are going to WDW in August 2010 with some friends who have a 4 year old child with PKA. I know that Disney restaurants are able to accomidate someone with PKU needs. I am looking for some info on specific restaurants and positive or not positive reviews on their ability to accomidate a child with PKU needs. Thanks........Zazu:goodvibes

I don't have specific experience with PKU. My experience is with severely restricted diets due to a long list of food allergies coupled with a deficiency of certain digestive enzymes. Some of what we do would also apply to your friends. We make a point of eating at restaurants that are owned by Disney. The Disney owned restaurants are so much better at accomodating all types of special dietary needs. We then look through the regualar menus of the restaurants on allears.net to see which ones have several foods that naturally meet our dietary restrictions (they may need alterations, but there are several with core ingredients that are safe). We also do online searches to find reviews by others with somewhat similar issues (in your friends' case, they can google PKU Disney and they'll get a bunch of results). Even if their issues aren't identical to ours, we'll at least get an idea of just how accomodating the restaurants are as well as what types of alternatives they've come up with to figure out how creative the chefs may be. We always attach a note about our restrictions to our ADRs (Advanced Dining Reservations) and then contract Brenda with Special Diets (contact info is in the stickies on this board). I go through our restrictions with Brenda and she emails lists of all sorts of amazing information. I also have her contact the chefs and have them call me to discuss what kinds of options my daughters will have. Some chefs will even ask about their favourite foods and special order things for them, though I certainly never expect that (boy is it extra pixie dust when it happens though; you should see the smiles on my kids' faces). You'll only get these kinds of calls if you tell Brenda that you need it. I wouldn't do it for myself, but I do request this because it's for my kids who in normal day to day life are so restricted.
