Pizza by the slice

I sometimes get worked up over pizza by the slice since it can be cut unevenly. If it’s behind a glass counter, I’ll sometimes point at the slice I want, and most get why I’m asking. However, I’m out with my kid at a place that normally cuts a whole pie into eighths, then tosses a tiny slice (of variable size) on top. I got two slices for myself and my kid, but one was extremely puny. As in the smallest piece I’ve ever seen at this place. I felt a little silly but I complained and they tossed another slice in.

Say what you will about the quality of Costco pizza, but they use a cutting guide for pizza by the slice. Something like this:

There's sooooo much I could say about Costco pizza but will stick to the topic at hand, LOL.
A "pro" knows how to cut 8 even slices if that's the way the pie is served. Half, quarter than 2 diagonal cuts and done.
At home, I use a chef's knife to cut since to my mind a pizza cutter is too specialised a tool for my kitchen's size.
Glad you got the right sized slices ultimately.

I cant quite rap my head around pizza by the slice, its not a hardly used thing in my city. But when I go on vacation its all over

I find that whole pies tend to be cut randomly, like this one:

There are a few places around here that have all you can eat pizza/salad for lunch. They're on a counter and frankly aren't cut all that well. Once I just wanted one slice and was told it was $1.50. And yes I picked the biggest one I could find, which was about twice the size of the smallest slice. But for a pizza "buffet" I guess it doesn't matter because one just get enough until one is done.

As for Costco pizza, there's no reason why it can't be a side discussion. Whole pies are cut randomly, but slices are cut with guides into sixths. The pizza isn't bad, but it's more quantity (18 inches and somewhat thick) for the price than anything else. It's enough to feed up to 5 people for about $10 plus any sales tax. And they taste the same anywhere. I remember my tourist guide to Hawaii even suggested going to the Costco in Kona for pizza if one was on a budget.

In my area, the Italian restaurants always cut SQUARES for THIN crust pizza, but slices for thicker crust. I notice the chains like Little Caesars, Dominos, they only do slices.
Frozen pizza in my house is always cut in slices, too.

The only place I've actually had little squares is when I was in Key Biscayne. I asked a local for where to eat and he recommended a place called Sir Pizza. I guess it's a chain with scattered locations in the midwest and south.

Domino's will actually cut into squares on request. I've ordered online and their special instructions include well done, garlic-crust (standard) or no garlic, and pie cut/square cut/uncut.
 
The only ones ever cut into squares when I was growing up were the Sicilian style, a thicker crust type pizza. Everything thing else was pie shaped slices.

Cutting pizza into fairly even slices isn’t rocket science, but when a place is busy and they are moving fast, I have seen some mighty uneven slices. Just imagine if the standard number of slices were an odd number!

My high school cafeteria is the last place I saw square pizza slices and that was 45 years ago! Pizza by the slice is a norm at places like the Target cafeteria and hospital cafeterias. Most of the pizza places expect you to buy the whole pizza, although most offer the personal pizza size.
 
I like the thin crust margarita pizza and it's cut into squares where I go. They are all pretty much the same size.
 
There are pizzarias in this area that don't cut their pies in equal sized pies but they don't sell by the slice.
 
All of the pizzerias serve slices, they are always even, some make slice pies that are a little bigger. However, whole pies aren’t as even, which I like, plus I’ll cut them with a kitchen scissor to get exactly what I want (my kids do the same). Only Sicilian and grandma pies are square.
