My dad is scheduled to have surgery on Monday morning to remove a benign tumor from his chest wall. It's not too serious of a problem, but it's pressing on his trachea and esophogus and causes a little cough and the feeling that he's not completely swallowing his food. He was given the option to wait until January, but he's tired of the waiting and anticipation and wants it done now!

We're hoping to have him home by Christmas Eve morning, and we're planning to do all of our Christmas meals at my parent's house since he will have to stay home. I don't mind doing Christmas differently this year. I just want my dad to be OK! If you have any extra pixie dust, please toss it his way!:)

Sometimes it's better to "just get it over with" - which, I hope, is the case for your Dad.

I will keep him in my prayers.

He's definitely a "get it over with" kind of person. Ten years ago, he found out he needed a quadruple bypass on a Friday. The doctor said he had a cancellation and could do it the following Monday and my dad jumped at it. He said if he'd waited any longer it would have driven him crazy!

Bless him, no surgery is without risk. Praying for safety and discernment of the medical staff. And a good outcome, of course.:goodvibes

Many of you were so kind to pray for my dad during his surgery earlier this week and I wanted to give you an update.

He came through the 3+ hour surgery just fine. The doctor thought he was going to have to make a 6 inch incision between his ribs but said there was a small chance he could do it with 5 small incisions and a scope. He wouldn't know until he started the surgery. Turned out he was able to use the scope so my dad's pain level and recovery time will be much less!

The surgery was Monday but he's still in ICU this morning. He's had a few small issues that they had to work out before they could move him to a regular room. It's nothing serious, but just little things (like fluid output) that need to be monitored and regulated. I'm going to the hospital pretty soon and hoping to hear that he'll be moved today (my boys really want to see him but can't go into ICU).

They've had him on an epidural to manage the pain from the chest tube. It's kind of funny because the drug in the epidural is causing him to have these really vivid fantasies and dreams (apparently, even though the epidural is localized, the medication flows throughout the body). Yesterday, I sat for almost an hour while he had lunch and sat up in a chair. I helped him open his food packets and gave him some dental floss afterward. A few hours later, he told my mom I hadn't come by yet. Then later, he told me he swears he was in the parking lot that morning in his gown and it was cold. He told my sister he was walking in the hills that he can see from his room. He also tried to convince me that I put one of my rabbits on my front lawn and took pictures of him (my rabbits don't go outside!). The nurses have assured us that he will leave "fantasyland" as soon as they turn off the epidural!

To everyone who prayed and kept us in their thoughts, a heartfelt thank you! It's nice to have my DIS friends for support!
