How long in advance do you need to stake out a spot for this? Any good tips about best places to sit?

I'd like to know this too, especially since we will have two young children plus two in strollers.

Is there a map of the parade route? I'm not familiar with DCA's route.

CM's will help you with the route, we staked out a great spot 10 minutes before the parade, people are more interested in carsland it seems.
Be prepared for some minor changes from the original though

I don't know the best spot...but will tell you our experience. We were eating at Corn Dog Castle right before the parade started. CM announced parade starting in 15 minutes. (it was soft opening so we weren't aware) We were sitting on the planters around the trees in front. If we had been on the street side it would have been a great spot in the shade, but it was taken...if we had known we could have probably gotten that spot. So...instead we walked down toward LM and stopped just across from Golden Zephyr. They roped off the sidewalk and we were allowed to stand in front of the rope in the shade...no one in front or behind. We got there about 5 min before parade started. We had a great view and loved the parade!!!
FYI...this was the week before CL opened so it may be a whole new ballgame now!

We saw it last week twice, once right across from the Silly Symphony Swings and then in front of Ariel's ride (not restaurant) had no problem getting a good shady spot about 15-20min before hand.

It went in opposite directions both times we saw it.

From what I have seen they had to lower some of the floats due to the trolley cables, or remove one of my favorite floats from Ratatouille with the trapeze artists :(
They used to have water squirting devices mounted on the floats, which was a great time and refreshing on a hot day...do they still have water features on the parade?

Yep still water squirters. The Toy Store float still has some acrobats.

Yup. Viewing crowds for the parade in PP was minimal both times we saw it from Mickey's Wheel last Mon and Wed. I walked along the parade route just before the parade from Ariel's Under the Sea to the Goofy's Sky School area and there were few if any guests camped out for spots. It appears to go from PP to Hollywood first and then the reverse for the second parade.

I think the Bug's Life one was spraying water from the flowers as well. My DS loved this parade so we had to go back and see it again.

the differences I noted were no Ratatouille
the incredibles bigoctopus looking thing is different, Violet was added to the back of it and Jack Jack sprouts fire, if that isn't new that my apologies I don't remember it Jack Jack accidentally lit one of the trees on fire but it was just a singe and quickly out no biggy and you can't even see it

they also don't move the tentacles anymore an that thing, not sure why

Instead of Lottso in the pickup truck it was a very small Mr. Potato Head that was VERY hard to see

No help with where the parade route is? Is it marked on the park maps?

From Disney Blog...

More people than ever will be able to “join in the party,” too, as the parade is presented up to twice daily along the new, longer Disney California Adventure park parade route, winding from the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in Hollywood Pictures Backlot all the way to Silly Symphony Swings on Paradise Pier.

It will start at Tower of Terror, make its way down Hollywood land, through BVS, up toward Paradise Pier (through the large pathway, passing by Cars Land) and ending at Paradise Garden Grill. Soundsational is a 24 minute parade, so Pixar might be 30-35 mins

When I saw the parade on Friday, it came up the backside of the rapid mountain and headed into Hollywood Land.
