Hi, I'm considering moving back to Pittsburgh -- I have an interview at UPMC on Thursday morning. Do any of you have information on how working for UPMC is? I did an internship at Montefiore (in pharmacy), but wasn't impressed. That was 20 years ago, though. These openings are at Presby, Shadyside or Western Psych.

Thanks for any help!

DSIL worked at UPMC as a nurse for 15 years or so and left to work for the Veterans Hospital. I know that she was interested in the government benefits and retirement when she made the switch.

Are you only interested in Hospital Pharmacies?

I'm interested in anything but retail. BTDT, for 15 years and don't want to go back. So, nice to work in a hospital where you actually get your 15 minute breaks and can actually eat a hot lunch. In retail, I never, ever got a break and would actually have to tell a tech to remind me to go to the bathroom because I was too busy.

I am sure that you are looking into a lot of different things. My friend felt exactly the same way that you do about retail. She now works for a company the supplies drugs to homecare, nursing homes, and hospice. I think that she is happy there. Mosso is the name of the company, I believe...

This probably wont be much help but...my DBIL is a radiation Tech who works for a smaller group that got taken over by UMPC last year. When he was talking about the change he said that parts of it would be good; ie better benefits, salary, etc; other parts of it wouldnt be. In particular not much flexibility on when to take vacation and things like that. I supposed that would depend on the specific department you worked for though.

I used to work at magee a few years ago and was there for the transition when UPMC took them over.

There certainly were alot of changes and very few for the good. UPMC is a for profit and believe me they sure want to make their profits.

I know it was just announced UPMC just bought over Mercy, Everyone I talked to shook their heads and said, it won't be for the good.

Maybe pharmacist are different but they sure didn't do anything for the nurses.
