Are there any Pittsburgh DIS-Runners who have done the Pittsburgh Great Race in the past or are signed up for it this year? I've never done an actual race of any distance, the Wine & Dine half will be my first. I was looking around for a 10k to use to maybe submit as a time and found this. I'm a bit scared to death of actually running with a bunch of people outside of my happy place (Disney).... results times look like I'd be coming in at the back of the pack. Probably not great for confidence. Plus there's the fact that I'm supposed to run 11 miles on Sept 29, not 6.2....

Anyhow, just curious if anyone's done it and what they thought.

I did the Great Race in 2010 and thought it was a fun event that I would do again if the timing worked out. It has the atmosphere of a marathon weekend with an expo, pasta dinners, finish line area, and since it is a point-to-point there is a bus to the start. The start area is in a really cool part of town called Squirrel Hill.

The course is really neat. It is pretty much straight downhill and goes through the campus of three Universities where there is a lot of course support. Really the only thing I think the race needs is a finisher's medal. Most 10k's don't have one but since the event is so huge I think it would be a good addition.

Not a DIS-runner (in fact a W.I.S.H. lurker who has only recently started the Galloway method for a 5k because every other time I trained for one my bad knee swelled up for days and I limped away into quittitude by 3 weeks in) but I am a Burgh local and have only heard good things about this race. I know people who have done both the 5 and 10k and perhaps as much of it (the 5k anyway) is downhill, I have heard few complaints on the course. It is a popular event and it can get crowded but it is loads of fun. I wanted to register for the GR 5k this year but am worried it might be too soon as I have the first in a series of appts for my knee next week and am in early stages of "training" - but I may register next month if I get an early green light.

True there isn't a medal, but the swag may have improved!;)
Happy training! :thumbsup2 :cheer2:

I thought about doing this one this year but by the time I decided it was closed.:rolleyes1 Maybe next year.

I am running the Great Race. I plan to submit my time for the Princess half. This will be my long run, even thought I should be doing 8 that weekend. It will be my first 10k, but considering the course elevation I feel good after doing most of my long runs at the North Park lake loop which is very hilly and tough.

I also ran the PGH marathon relay this year nd was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was.
