According to Aaron Babcock(WDW manager of Product Development), Disney will be changing the Wicked Wench into the Black Pearl. I recently got this information from from him this past week. Whatever problems Disney had with the rights of the Pearl, I assume everything is fine now.

You mean they ponied up enough money to appease Jerry? :teacher:

I was there last weekend and I was surprised by one major change since the referb. The "brides for sale" seemed a lot more reluctant than originally(crying as opposed to showing their "starboard side").

Only 2 of them were ever "flaunting" It.

Why would they make this change now? Nobody cares about the movies anymore.

Wasnt the Wicked Wench the same ship, that sank, and Captain Jack made the deal with Davy Jones, to raise the ship and rename it the Black Pearl, then Jack would be captain for 15 years?

That's the back story they made up and put on the internet to justify their confusing movies and also to justify the use of a different name.

Actually the opposite side - "larboard", or left side, as it was called before "port" came into use to avoid confusion in the mid 19th century.

Anyhow, I don't believe tha scene changed at all (at least not at WDW) in the last refurb. "Buy a Bride" replaced "Wed a Wench" on the garment sign at the same time the chase scene got ruined. 1997, I believe.

Let me ask this - you mention the chase scene, didn't the pirates use to chase the women, but now the women are all chasing the pirates? Or have I forgotten, I seem to remember that as a kid?

I'm pretty sure the pirates used to chase the women. Un "PC" now days, of course. Violence against women and all that. No more good un-clean fun for us! Argh! pirate:

Here's why the chase scene was considered un-pc. The original scene had a punch line. The first chases featured lecherous pirates chasing after fleeing ladies. The final chase featured a rotund woman, giggling and chasing after a pirate who had the same look of fright on his face as the first ladies did. This reversal was the comedic punchline to the joke. Something that offensive (roll eyes here) couldn't possibly perservere.

Also, in the middle of that scene, the barrell now occupied by Jack Sparrow held a very young lady until the most recent change. However, up until about 1997, the pirate sitting in front of the barrell was not holding the treasure map, rather the lady's petticoat. And, his script was pretty spicy for a Disney attraction. He suggested that he was looking for a bewitched maiden he once knew that he'd like to "hoist his colors" upon, and that if anyone might help him find the "shy little wench", he might be "willing to share".

Personally, I thought it lost something when they changed it match the ghost movie Pirates of the Caribean by Disney. Sheesh! I also though the Living Seas lost some charm when it became Finding Nemo.
