We are going to DLR for 2 days at the end of July. With me, my husband, and two teen boys is it worth a trip out to Tom's Island now that pirates have overtaken it? pirate: Or is it mainly geared towards children? Just curious to hear from those who have seen it.

I think it is sort of geared towards children. There are some great things to see
on the island though. They have a great pirate show and there's lots of neat
things to see. I think its worth a shot to see it !

It is definitely worth it to explore the island, no matter what the age. It only takes five minutes to wait in line and get across the river on the boats and the same coming back. Spend a fixed amount of time on the island and discover it's many secrets! You can spend 30 minutes over there and have a great time, go into the caves and check out the treehouse!

If you are into the views the island offers a very unique and wonderful view of New Prleans Square and Big Thunder Mountian.

It's good to just check it out, especially if they're pirate fans. If they are, they can even visit Jack Sparrow. I think the caves are exciting and there's just fun things to see.

I cannot remember, are the boats that take you to the pirates island, small or large? asking that, for I do not know how to swim, and the idea of going out into water, in a small boat, scares me to death! I am fine, with traveling on ferries for example, which I very much enjoy, matter of fact, however, tiny boats, a lot of chunky people, me included, no thank you. (shudders in fear)
Sorry, did not mean to go off topic.

They are actually large motorized rafts. You could stand in the middle of the raft and feel very safe, I would think. There are barrier walls and ropes around the outsides.

Here are some pictures:

Thank you for posting the pictures, and for your reply, as well. I had forgotten about those boats. (d'oh!) ;)

:flower3:

That second picture looks like the raft is about to sink!

I have never, ever, made it to Tom Sawyer's Island. (isn't that sad?) Dh took my dd over in 2006 and they have fun. This year, he took dd and older ds, while I ran and got Fastpasses with the baby. I guess there were a bunch of teenagers in the caves, jumping out to scare each other. Not really fun for my 7 year old and 4 year old. Plus, my 4 year old left my 7 year old in the dust, and she freaked out because she was by herself. By the time I met up with them, my 7 year old ran to me and was clingy for a little while.

So, it's fun for a lot of people. But if your dh is as clueless as mine is, the kids will need additional supervision. (My poor dh actually brought the camera in hopes of pictures. LOL All he wound up doing was protecting it while chasing down 2 freaked out kids)

We went there for the first time a month ago and I think it is worth going on the island. I've been going there for years and never knew what was on the island... wazowskiLOVER is right, there's a lot of neat things to see..

You have to go into the little caverns in the caves!
Sometimes you might encounter scary things =)

Well, I'm a pirate fan! pirate: Sounds like it is worth a look. I remember having lots of fun there when I was little. I even remember eating beef jerky there for the first time and loving it. Don't know if it was sold there or if my mom already had it.

I guess I better head over and see what the pirates are up to. :)
