Pirates just went splat

As to the reviewers who are panning...in my hometown paper, the reviewer also said it was "confusing". I looked back over other films he has reviewed. Those that are "grown up" movies (the ones that I usually won't see because they are mostly trumped up soap operas or smug literary in tone) always get raves from him. Movies that I consider "just good yarns", he always pans. It could be that DEAD MAN'S CHEST is like the difference between Disney World or Las Vegas. Grown ups go to Las Vegas. Those of us who are still children go to Disney World.
But the first film got a 79% Tomatomometer reading on rottentomatoes.com.

The movie was OK, definately a bridge movie for the third. THough it did not live up to the high expectations I had for it, it was definately worth the money

One big question I have as I walked out was why the monkey was still undead if the Aztec Curse was lifted in POTC1.

I thought the monkey stole a piece of gold at the end of POTC1.

You'd have to watch through the end credits to know about the monkey in the first one.

mitros. I understand your problems now.

First of, 60" is a namby pamby wuss size. Mine goes up to 90" :teeth:

Secondly, Costco has a really nice Dolby Digital EX 7.1 surround sound amp and speaker package for about $450. Get that, and you'll never think movie theater sound systems are good again, or if you've got the cash, get a THX certed system. Then literally, it can't be better.

Heck, my Amp goes to 11.

Just read on boxoffice mojo that they are estimating Dead Man's Chest to break the opening weekend (3-day) ticket sales record with $132+ million. Spiderman 2 held this spot with $114+ million. Not to shabby :teeth:

. . . critic to a host of others . . .
Be sure and see it. It is excellent! And if you DON'T like it . . . well, there's no accounting for (lack of) taste.

Hey, until I can squeeze a 40' screen into my house, I think I'm going to continue to go to the theatre. Sticky floors and all........

So few theaters actually have 40' screens. Certainly though, I can't disagree with that logic.

I liked the film by the way.

That's true. We do have two theatres in our area though, and each one has at least one really huge screen, and when a movie comes out that we want to see, one of these large screens will usually show the movie we want to see.

I can't believe what i just saw :confused3 a movie review by Jeffrey Lyons, he stated the movie was to "confusing" he had trouble following he plot (HELLO!) my kids didn't have any trouble. After he got done ripping the film apart he begrudgingly admits "I suppose it will make a lot of money though". Well duh maybe it's because as an elitist snob your way outta touch with the mainstream american movie going public :rotfl2: Gee thanks mister professional movie critic for trying to save me from myself, sheesh :smooth:

this movie was great go see it and judge for yourself ;)

I saw that too! I thought, You have to be kidding me!! Listen my mom has alzheimers and I know she would not follow it, maybe Jeffrey Lyons needs some medication to help him!
Geesh!

OK, slightly :offtopic:, but I have to ask. Why would anyone want to go to {any} movie the first day, or, the first week, for that matter? Would that be a person that also likes to go to WDW in the middle of the high :crowded: season? Personally, we wait till the second or third week to go see a movie. No lady with big hair sitting in front of you, no hoards of screaming teeny boppers, no swearing teenagers, etc., etc. You can sit anywhere you want, you can stretch your legs out in the aisle, no line at the concession stand, I could actually go on and on, but I think I made my point. But, that's just me. :wave2:

We like to make events out of going to the first showing of a big movie, POTC, Harry Potter, Star Wars, LOTR, etc. At the midnight shows, it's always fun to see how many people really get into it, by dressing up. There were tons of pirates (and some really good costumes) at the 12:01 showing we saw! We'll go again when the crowds have died down, it was an awesome movie! pirate:

You people are nuts, I loved the movie, but Lyons is right, the plot is terribly convoluted. The plot in the first one had holes you could drive a Mack truck through. These movies are about character and only about character and the stories that those characterizations tell.

I loved the movie!! Kiera Knightly is such a lucky girl

Honestly, I read the reviews, but I don't really let that affect if I want to see a movie or not. I read somewhere that the movie was not "believable"...was it supposed to be?? :confused3 The first one had a bunch of guys who were undead and turned into skeletons in the moonlight...now that is believable!! It was long, but not too long, and it was funny!! I can't wait until the third one, it will be interesting to see what happens with Jack/Elizabeth/Will.

Hey watch the spellin comments!! That could be me your talkn about....since I'm a "hunt and peck" kinda girl!!!

Not all of use were taught to type!!!

Oh, you think that review is a piece of work, go to the Boston Globe and read what that idiot had to say!

I guess I'm one of those with no taste because I was very disappointed in the movie. What I loved about the first one were the laughs, and there are very few of those in the sequel. Next, I was disappointed in how they handled some of the characters. One goes from an honorable person to a vomitous mess with no real explanation. I did like the Davy Jones characters--they were awesome.

What carries this movie is the incredible positive feelings of the first movie. Honestly, if this were the first movie had been made in more of a "darker" theme instead of a humorous one there never would have been a sequel.

I feel the same way as you that this was definitely a much darker movie, but I think in a sense that it had to be that way. In order to develop a story line that will last for at least two movies you would have to do some in depth story-telling and plot and character development, I think they wanted to delve into the darker side and try to make the characters a little more complex so that the story could last.

As far as the commodore, I felt that his character change was explained well enough and was somewhat believable.

We too were a little disappointed in the movie. We liked parts of it but-well- without spoiling it for those of you who haven't seen it, we didn't care for how they left Jack's character in the end. Kinda a let-down for us even though we know the story continues into POC 3.
