I just read that Tom Sawyer Island is leaving us and that a new pirate island will take its place... man Disney is getting rid of all the classics.

hardly. Many classics are being kept alive. However, TSI was not a popular location any longer. We rarely took the time to go over there. The available activities on TSI had dwindled due to fear of lawsuits. So Disney decided to make some changes to the island to make it more relevant to today's kids. In general the changes seem like a good idea to me.

Me too because I've never even bothered to go to TSI because I thought it sounded lame but I most definately will check out the pirate island. Good change in my opinion.

Yeah Im looking forward to the Pirates island. Im 24 and barely know who Tom Sawyer is. I look at my nephew and think "Gees he isnt gonna have a clue". So yeah its a good idea. You can ask any little kid or adult for that matter who Jack Sparrow is and they go OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH hes the coolest pirate ever! This is when you know its time for an upgrade.

When I went over to TSI with my mom who is a big fan of TS she was really disappointed. I dont think we spent anymore then 15 min on the island before heading back and not returning.

You couldn't be more wrong. First off, I don't think Jack Sparrow is the cooles pirate ever. I've never seen POTC 1 or 2, and wont see 3,4,5 - 100. I could care less who Jack Sparrow or any of the other pirates are.

Secondly, it is sad that you barely know who Tom Sawyer is, and that your nephew doesn't have a clue. Perhaps you and he could spend some quality time reading Mark Twain's classic story together.

The fact is that TSI is in FRONTIERLAND. To my knowledge, there were never any pirates in the American frontier. Not only is disney ruining this attraction, they are altering the theme of an entire land. Desecrating the Pirates ride was one thing, but this is pathetic.

It is obvious that in this day and age, Disney will do anything and everything to milk every last penny out of out of their lower than average films, etc. The way I see it, they could have used the wasted space in the Big Thunder Ranch area to "imangneer" something new with a pirate theme. This "update" to TSI is going to be a disaster. They have no way to manage the amount of time spent by guests on the island. Access to the island is limited, and so is capacity on the island. This could create one of the longest wait times for any attraction at the park. And no FastPass!

Have fun!

Im sorry to be so blunt but that reply was just cruel. Everything is based on opinion and I felt like you were totally attacking me there and I would appreciate it if you would stop.

The generation above me never really taught us much on TS, so how would my generation really know who it is? I have read tom sawyer out of my own decision but the bottom line is my generation was not really brought up with it, and I see no indicator for the generation below me knowing who it is, unless we read it to them. Even if I read it to my nephew its just one kid out of millions who may not have it read to. For your sake though I hope kids do get to read it. But like everything, things get old and TS is going that way. Pirates will eventually too.

I work in an elementary school and I know what the fads are. Pepole crave the latest fads and thats what the pirates is right now. The kids LOVE it and the adults are buzzing about the next movie coming out this year. But if you dont like Jack Sparrow then thats fine no one is faulting you for that.

As to where they are gonna do a pirate attaction I see your point definately but anything is ok with me. Disneyland, disney world whatever, its all gonna be fun no matter what they do.

TSI doesnt have to make sense. TSI is on its own. ^_^

Just because your not a POTC fan, doesnt mean you can just go around dissing people on it. Some people are true fans of POTC. Some people are not. Im not really a big fan of it but still, i love HSM and i will defend that to the ground!

at first, i didnt really like the idea, but judging that there are so many people who live it, i think it be a great idea.

I completely agree with you!

And the for the poster above who was nasty, please keep these boards friendly. The DL boards have been commented previously as being very friendly don't ruin our reputation please.

I think the younger generations know POTC way better than they know Tom Sawyer and of course there will be people disappointed but unfortunately there isn't a whole lot of room for Disneyland to expand so some of the older attractions will have to be replaced for the newer crowds.

Whether or not you have seen the POTC movies, hundreds of millions of others have. I have four sons who think these movies are great. I happen to think they are very well done as well.

Secondly, it is sad that you barely know who Tom Sawyer is, and that your nephew doesn't have a clue. Perhaps you and he could spend some quality time reading Mark Twain's classic story together.

When my DS15 was 13, he performed speaking competitions with memorized lines from Tom Sawyer. He was Huck Finn and his partner was Tom. But Tom Sawyer Island bores him and all of my other sons. The TSI of yesterday might have been a cool place in its time, but it does not compare to the types of entertainment options available to kids today. You can complain all you want about the sentimental value of a classic, but TSI is past its prime IMO and in desperate need of some kind of upgrade. The POTC movie franchise gave Disney a reason to do this upgrade. And last time I looked, there were two ships that sailed on the Rivers of America around TSI - the Mark Twain and the Columbia. The MT represents Frontierland while the Columbia ties in with New Orleans Square and Adventureland. IMO the Rivers of America is just as much a part of New Orleans Square and Adventureland as Frontierland.

And you think the POTC ride was "desecrated". It was 40 years old! And the only changes were the PC changes in the 1990's! And Disney had a blockbuster on their hands with the POTC movie series which was inspired by this ride. I am a pretty hard core traditionalist. And POTC is my favorite ride at all of DLR. But I also have four sons and what Disney did was make the POTC ride more relevant for them for the next 20+ years. And they did it with some modest changes to the ride while keeping the spirit and feel. Obviously I disagree with you here.

It is obvious that in this day and age, Disney will do anything and everything to milk every last penny out of out of their lower than average films, etc.
Last time I checked the Walt Disney Company was a business with a responsibility to its shareholders. If the Disney Company does not make a profit, there will be no more park improvements. And while some of their movies have been lower than average (as with all producers), many have been far above. Look at the top grossing movies release in 2006 here www.imdb.com/Sections/Years/2006/top-grossing. Notice the top two? That would be POTC 2 and Cars - both Disney movies.

The way I see it, they could have used the wasted space in the Big Thunder Ranch area to "imangneer" something new with a pirate theme.
That would be a good idea. Better yet, imagineer something completely new.

This "update" to TSI is going to be a disaster.
Really? Lets see if the demand picks up this summer for access to the island. I will bet you a Dole Whip that it will increase signficantly.

Access to the island is limited, and so is capacity on the island. This could create one of the longest wait times for any attraction at the park. And no FastPass!
From what I understand DLR will provide more rafts to increase capacity to the island. Makes sense to me.

Go Hydroguy!

What i think of the Big THunder ranch, its like the only place a company can rent and have lunch. ITs also great for special events and such. i cant think of another place for that.

EDIT: just because you think Disneyland is taking ALL your money, doesnt mean its all in profits. Disneyland has to pay a lot of things you dont really see. Thats as far as i will talk about.

Yay everyone for sticking up for Mystic. Im sorry to the op, but your response to her opinion was completelly uncalled for.

um...isn't Pirates in the same land??? or at least right next to it?

Whoa, it looks like someone woke up on the cranky side of the bed today and decided to visit our FRIENDLY DL boards to stir up some trouble.

Everyone has opinions and you should RESPECT that. Yours is not the only way.

These are my opinions:
TSI needs a facelift. Let's face it, I know all about the story and this Island does not do it justice anymore. I agree maybe in it's heyday it was great but things do need to be updated and changed with the times. POTC will possibly draw huge amounts of crowds to the island that have been missing for a long time. I really think it will be something new that will bring more visitors in and from a company standpoint isn't that good???? Yes. I know I'm looking forward to it.

You yourself said you have not seen POTC so I dont think you can judge that either.

While respecting your opinion I do not respect you jumping down the throats of other posters just because they do not agree with you. You should not attack personally. Mystic had EVERY right to say she was excited about Pirates and you did not need to bash her. Let's keep this friendly please. Mystic just stated her opinion and did not bash you as you did her.

I appreciate your Disney purist point of view. I do know and love Tom Sawyer both the books and the Disney films. They are GREAT! Literary and Cinema classics!!!

The island never did it for me though. It was fun for a few minutes, but it has grown tired over the years. Time to move on.

I LOVE the idea of Pirates Island and dont really care if it doesn't work with the theming. It is a waste of space as it is. NOW it'll be an exciting space to chase my kids.

Cap'n Jack is COOL! Just ask my kids!

Wow, quite snarky ex Dis Vet. While we all get attached to attractions at the parks, Walt was all about changing, plussing and evolving the experiences at the parks. They were imagined by him as almost living things that would constantly change. So it's time for a change, you may not like it, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. And like someone already said, the pirates attraction is directly accross from TSI. And the Columbia doubles as Captain Hook's ship during Fantasmic, so this really isn't much of a streach. Disney is not milking anything, but cross promoting, just like they've always done. And I think with Pirates they have out done themselves. We really got a huge charge out of seeing the Flying Dutchman anchored at Castaway Cay during our Disney curise last September. They know what people want and they will give it to them.

How was my reply cruel? I don't think it was cruel in any way. It was (to quote you) "blunt". There was no attack on you like the others here seem to suggest. I simply suggested that you read Tom Sawyer with your nephew. Is there any harm in that. Mark Twain was one of the greatest storytellers in American history. His works all take place during the early days of this country. I don't disagree that TSI needed an update. I disagree with the pirate thing in Frontierland.

If "keep our little Disneyland board friendly" means I have to agree with everyone, forget it. And for the record. I am also part of your "generation". True, I am a Disney purist and would prefer that they didn't alter every attraction to fit the fad of the day, but I will not be afraid to state my opinion on such changes.

I dealt with people like you last year over the POTC thing. I have the right to state my opinion here, just like you. And one thing I have developed from my many years on the DISboards is a thick skin. So if you all want to gang-up on me, I say BRING IT! Otherwise, get over yourselves.

Things like "you couldn't be more wrong" and "maybe you and your nephew should try reading the books" and looking at this post "I dealt with people like you last year" This things are rude and not appreciated. I have been friends with the people on this particular board for a while, and whether you agree or not, you did come across as rude and made the people here feel like you are attacking them. It should not surprise me though, I posted a question on a different board, and you were one of the people who responded with a very nasty reply. You have every right to state your opinion, but state it as such, without attacking the people posting on these boards.

:thumbsup2 Well said.

to comment on the "friendly Disneyland board" remark I have to say that no, of course you don't have to agree with everyone here. We surely don't. It's just the way it was done. There is a respectful way of stating one's opinion and I didnt see that much in your responses. And to add you stated that being on the DISboards has given you a thick skin. I understand that because there are other sections of the DIS that will attack you for no reason. Here on the DL boards we really don't NEED a thick skin because everyone for the most part is respectful. That is all we ask of you.
