Can I pack my lanyard and pins in my carry on? I dont want them lost...When my children were small they were picked to lead the parade in front of American Adventure, the pictures and certificate and all of our clothes were lost and I still mourn that loss and don't want to take a chance on losing this. Will they confiscate my Disney trading pins? I appreciate any help, Nanci

When we were checking our baggage at our Disney resort in May to come home, we were warned by the airline person to put our pins and lanyards in our packed bags or else they would confiscate them, considering them weapon-like. We were told they wouldn't allow them in carry-on baggage. So we took them off and packed them, right then and there. I didn't want to run the risk of having them taken away. Better safe than sorry!

I put our pins in our carry on bags. Nobody said a word through security:confused3 . Gosh, mine are all packed in my carry on for tomorrow. I hope someone comes along and knows the answers!

We just flew home last night and mine were in the checked baggage.. Guess which one of my bags had a TSA 'bag has been searched' thing in it? Yep, the one with the pins. Could've just been the luck of the draw of course, but in my last 3 trips somewhere I've never had any of my bags picked..

I guess I'd rather chance having them lost in my checked baggage, then having the taken by the TSA at the checkpoint and never seeing them again..

we flew 12/2-12/7 and granddaughter (age 17) carried her pin bag as her carryon, in fact the man checking carryons ask if we had time for him to look at them. and returning she had only 1 carry on and it was her pin bag not a word was said to her on either trip.

I have never checked my pins or my dd's pins and we usually have a bunch on the way home. Over 12 trips in the last three years - since the new restrictions and no problems.

Check the TSA website - no mention of trading pins!

Well Thanks Everyone. I guess I will pack them for safety and cross my fingers that I get all of my bags....They have been misplaced, sent on another plane and only that one very special time were they lost for good. Good Luck to All and a Very Merry Mickey Christmas.:smickey: :mickeyjum ::MinnieMo :santa:

I am confused are you going to place them in checked bags? I was not going to even chance placing granddaughters out of sight, way to much cash in them she never let go of them in fact she placed them under her seat and had the strap around her leg. I have seen on the boards people talk about checked bagged pins have came up missing, I sure would not chance it. I am not sure about others but airtran had no problem with them on board with us.

It's not airtran that would have any issue, it would be the TSA that could. That's all that's being stated.

If you go to the forum on DIS about Pin Trading, you'll find the big time traders saying they take their bags with literally hundreds of pins in them on the plane with them.....they aren't taking any chances with losing hundreds (or thousands) of dollars of pins.

I haven't done it yet, but based on those pin traders' discussions, I fully plan to take them on board (way too much money invested to check them, just as I'd never check an ipod, camera or other expensive easy to steal and sell item....they can have all my underwear they want, even the dirty ones!).

I can't imagine how something with a 1/4" pin could be considered a weapon when we're allowed to take so many other things that would be much more dangerous, lol. THe number of pins you have aren't going to increase your threat...."stand back...I have 20 mickey head pins and I know how to use them". Ok, maybe if you had one of those huge pin bags full of pins you could seriously hurt someone if you swung it at them. You'd only be able to "stab" somebody with two at a time (have you tried to hold them things?). Since you're allowed to take scissors on board (4" or shorter), I can't imagine how a 1/4" point could be more dangerous.

If you check the TSA link I provided above there is no restriction on bringing trading pins in your carryon. In fact you can carry sissors and other sharp objects of a much longer length than trading pins. We have taken trading pins on every disney trip as well as on skating competitions, that's 12 r/t's in a little over 2 years so 24 legs and no problems.

I would not ever pack anything of value in my checked bags. You can't lock them and if you do the TSA has the authority to break the lock and search your luggage. There is not much to prevent those who wish to steal from doing so and the passenger has little recourse. If it has value like jewelry, medicine, or even pins then I either carry it on or leave it home.

Ok I guess I have changed my mind now:confused3 and will bring them on board with me. I do see the point of their not being dangerous and so I am trusting that the agents at MacArthur airport on LI will agree. I will let you all know when I get back. Happy Holidays, Nanci

Yes please let us know! Especially me since I'm also leaving from Macarthur Airport

I was just at Disneyland. Flew out of Seatac airport, then came home through the San Diego airport, had two lanyards chock full of pins (plus a packet or two of the locking pin backs with that scary looking tiny allen wrench) in my carryon, and not a word was said.

I think they did take an extra long look at that bag on the way home through San Diego, but it had camera cords, batteries, lanyards, books, some star wars toys...lots of different images for them to sort through!
