I don't know if this has been discussed before (if it has, be kind), but ...

Has anyone tried to board an airplane with pins lately? Are they even allowed (being sharp objects)? Should I just ship them to my parents house so I'll have them by the time I get to Florida?

Please, please, please advise??

we traveled to wdw last month (19-29) and took 3 pin bags with us. We had all the bags in 1 wheeled carryon. Of course we were stopped at the electric checkpoints. Be prepared to have every page of your pin bags checked, some opened the zipper pockets also. It did not seem to be a problem just allow a bit more time to get through the check points. When we entered the parks the bags were also checked but more of a quick glance through, we only take 1 smaller bag to the parks with our traders in. Just have a great time trading and don't worry too much about the checks.

Thanks, Bev, for the update.

I am planning on a trip the first week in December and was trying to figure out what to do with all my traders! I was really loathe to put them in my checked luggage as I've heard too many (2 or 3 which is 2 or 3 too many!) cases of pins being stolen from someone's checked luggage.

When we went from Cleveland to Orlando September 8th (obviously before the tragedy), my pin bags were searched page by page, so I wouldn't be surprised to have them searched this time (this was actually funny, because both the xray scanner and the examiner begged for a Mickey pin -- so I gave them each one :) ).

That's okay, though. I'll just plan the extra time. It is a small price to pay for the security.

Thanks!

After giving this some thought, I am shipping my pins to my parents house via priority mail. I don' t have that many, but I do want to trade. I figure that the airport security would be more understanding letting me fly home from Orlando with the pins, than flying out of JFK with pins.

No big deal. I'll probably throw in my scissors and needles for my cross stitch. LOL! I never considered myself a security risk before!!

I just flew home today from Orlando.
At my home airport they went through all my pins, and checked every page.
At the Orlando airport they put the bag through the scanner and nothing. No one even asked about them. I picked the bag up and went to the police officer and told him that I know they see alot of pins going through that airport but they should be checked manually too. He said that the person scanning can distinguish between pins and other objects. Oh well.
I didn't hear about the crash until I got home, luckily, our flight left at 9:15 from Orlando and arrived in Hartford 25 minutes late. We flew far over the ocean, not along the coast like we normally do. I didn't know why until later when I realized that they were avoiding the NY airspace.

I just got home last weekend and flew out of Dulles Airport. We carried our pins on both ways with no problem. Out of Dulles the screener checked each page carefully and took a total of 5 minutes. Out of Orlando the screener said "you've got Disney pins"! He then asked to see them. He had us flip through the pages and congratulated us on a great collection. Took about 3 minutes. I was initiatially nervous and did not want to put my collection in my checked luggage. Overall, the checkin, added security, and flight was wonderful. We had very few waits and the longest line we had was out of Dulles was in the x-ray line--it took about 10 minutes to get through it We spent alot of time sitting around waiting to board the plane. Our flights both ways left exactly on time and arrived ahead of time. The airline employees were great. We were prepared for the worse case scenario, but happily all went smoothly. We flew on Delta this trip. Left early 6:45AM flight and coming home we had an 8:45PM flight. A perfect flight experience!

Well, OK, my parents think I'm insane, but a priority mail box is on its way to Florida containing:

1. Pins (rack traders)
2. Embroidery scissors and needles
3. Lanyard
4. Pedometer

(What the heck, the last 2 were light and I figured I'd forget to pack them anyway).

Did you ever try to explain to a 75 year old woman why you were sending Disney Pins to Florida? My mother has no idea what pin trading is, and couldn't understand why I'd be obsessed with it. She was more than willing to accept the idea that I was sending my scissors and needles ahead (I can't leave home without my counted cross stitch). I'm not sure how I'm going to get my scissors home from Orlando, but I did send my cheap ones in case they get confiscated at the airport (needles will be thrown out).

Mission accomplished -- Donna

I really DON'T like it, but I'm checking my pins now:-(
Austin Bergstrom is super super critical...and I don't like being singled out for a 5-10 min search...also I've heard they CONFISCATE and don't return anything they think is dangerous...they might think I'd take all the pinbacks off and use it as a makeshift medieval "mace";-)
I know the risks of checking, and I don't like to do it, but I don't feel I have a choice...:(

We have recently flown from Chicago to Los Angeles and Chicago to Orlando. Both times we had no problem getting through security.

It took them about 3-5 minutes to go through both carryon bags that my wife and I had which both contained pins. They spent more time looking at the pins and admiring them than it took to check them.

So I would not be afraid to carry them on. The pins that got the hardest look were the small bag of loose traders that we carry to trade off cast member lanyards.

I'm with Peggi - flew out last Thursday, only a scanty check of the pins at Bradley and then took more- oh my pocketbook!!- home and in Orlando there was no problem either. Really depends on the airport, i think. Both airports did have tight security though- especailly Orlando!

My priority mail box arrived at my parents yesterday (according to mom), so my pins, embroidery needles and scissors are now safely in Delray Beach waiting for me.

It was worth not having the extra worry (among everything else).
