Pins from Ebay

I'm a relative newbie, I've been to DL twice as a child and then teen, but this is my first trip as a parent.

A blog post introduced me to pin trading as I never really paid attention as a kid. The author of the blog directed me to eBay were you can often buy grab bags of pins for cheap... Well I bought some and now I've come across another blog that says taking pins bought online from amazon or eBay is unethical because it has the potent to introduce counterfeits into the trading pool.

What say YOU?

I say they're right. Pins bought in grab bag sales for low prices are almost guaranteed to be fakes or "scrappers." You CAN trade them with CMs at the park, but it's pretty uncool to trade a 99 cent eBay fake for a legitimate Disney pin.

Almost all those bulk lots for cheap have a lot of scrappers in them.

Gotta expect it when you get 50 pins for $20

Well put! :thumbsup2

There are legit pin sellers on ebay, but a general guide is if you got them for less than $2-$3 per pin, they are probably not genuine Disney pins and I would not want to trade them. DISmember Pixiewings71 has a good listing in her signature of reputable (and not so) ebay sellers.

Eh, I'd disagree with the cost as the deciding factor. A few years back I considered selling my collection. All purchased and traded before the market was saturated. The going price was 2ish. Sadly:/

There's a thread (maybe even a board?) where pin traders who really know what they're talking about have listed the beaters that can be trusted to sell real pins and those that can't. I use that thread as my guide.
I say "those who know" because I'm a casual pin collector/trader and wouldn't necessarily be able to identify a scrapper, where these people really seem to have a handle on it.

I am not a big pin collector but I did start this series that I wanted to complete and I was missing one pin so I checked ebay. I found it and purchased it and when it arrived it was obviously a fake. I had to do some more searching but I found a legitimate pin and purchased that one to complete my series. The fake pin I gave to a friend who is not a pin collector and she still has it. Just be careful when purchasing pins outside of authorized pin retailers.

I got a few on ebay last year for my kids even though we never got around to doing the trading....but we may next year...how do you know if they are fake?

Did you buy individual pins or a bunch of them for a certain price?
You can always go to Pinpics.com...Find the pin in their database, and it will tell you the scrappers characteristics.

The problem is it is a domino effect. TONS of ppl buy the cheap scrappers in big lots off Ebay and take them to the park to trade. They don't care if they are fake. So you may buy some $5 pins and be trading real pins for Chinese scrappers. Which is more than most likely what will happen.

So until everybody else quits trading cheap scrappers you should just go ahead and trade with the pins you have.

There are dozens and dozens of threads on here about pin trading where ppl proudly admit they buy lots of pins off Ebay for less than $1 each and they have all their kids trade them in the parks.

I don't trade pins for that very reason. But if I did there is no way I would buy real pins and trade them at the parks for fakes.

If you are going to buy expensive real pins just buy the pins you like and keep them. Then trade the Ebay pins in the park for ones you see that you like on a CM lanyard. Unless you are a Disney pin expert you can't usually tell at first glance if it is real or not.

I only bought some because I thought it would be a fun thing to do while waiting in line. My son is 5 and he's never been to DL before so he doesn't even "get it" yet. I guess we could just do without the trading at all. I knew I should have asked you guys first before buying.

Don't discount trading due to the bad apples, there are quite a few of us out here that are good traders and we don't circulate pins we know are scrappers. The link for the eBay thread is in my signature (the link above is the old list, the one in my signature is the updated list), I've used sellers there and been able to get good traders for good prices. Best of luck!

Hi Pixiewings,

I checked the thread in you signature. I'm not sure if I'm missing it somewhere, but I thought I'd ask... I bought a lot from disneyfamily801 on ebay. Am I missing them somewhere?

TIA.
:)

Nevermind. I did a google search and I found where they are in the thread (page 98!). Of course the seller is a bad seller. Darn it.:furious:
