Pineapple allergy at Ohana or SoA?

I swear I searched and didn't find anything that specifically mentioned a pineapple allergy- mostly gluten free diets or dairy free diets. I'm curious if anyone has been to any of the bigger meals at the Poly with a pineapple allergy and how much that changed your options. I'm hoping to get an allergy test in before our trip but right now I'm to err on the side of caution and assume I'm allergic. But I want to go do fun meals!

Note it on your ADRs and contact Special Diets. You will be taken care of.

Yes I know that. I just want to make sure Im not going to miss all the tasty stuff! :-)

Lots of food allergies here, but not specifically pineapple.

I have a non-heat sensitive peach allergy that cross-reacts to everything in the Roseaceae family (peach, strawberry, raspberry, apple, blackberry, almond, plum, rose, etc.) so I understand your pineapple concern.

In general, the food allergy you list might not make it back to the kitchen. Their computer system is...inadequate...to say the least. Pineapple falls into the "other" category and can (and IS in my experience) be easily overlooked. No amount of calling or e-mailing will reduce that risk.

I ate at the Poly for breakfast on the last day of my trip this past December after a very stressful trip of dealing with food allergies. I was at my wit's end so I went and talked to a manager the night before and personally handed her my list of food allergies with two copies just in case. I wouldn't recommend going that far for most food allergies, but fruit allergies can be a bit problematic at the Poly to say the least and I had had some terrible experiences including outright lying by staff at other restaurants that I wanted to avoid for the Poly meal.

I don't know what items contain pineapple or pineapple in the sauce. I can tell you that I didn't react to any of the fruit I ate, which means that they were good about cross-contamination when cutting the fruit that I personally ate. You obviously won't have the same people preparing your food. You will get your very own fruit plate though sans-pineapple and possibly orange juice instead of their infamous POG juice or whatever they call it now.

Is the pineapple allergy a new issue for you? Is it life-threatening vs. uncomfortable? You obviously know your reaction better than anyone, but sometimes taking two Benadryl and a Mucinex D allows me to take a bit of a risk with small amounts of my non-life-threatening food allergies. They can't really guarantee that a little bit of pineapple juice didn't accidentally find it's way onto something you are going to eat. Fruit juices are tricky that way in a fruit-laden environment!

I'm not allergic to pineapple but I do have lots of other allergies. Looking back at my meal in Nov, I don't recall there being pineapple in anything I ate. Make a note of your allergy on your ADR and the chef will take care of you.

Thank you! I've always gotten a painful, swollen, red rash inside my mouth when eating it and growing up everyone said it was probably just too acidic for me but when I discussed it with my midwife when I was pregnant (and several other medical professionals since then), she said it sounded like an allergy and while it seemed mild to me, she advised I treat it as a very serious allergy because it may not have any effect one day and send me to the hospital the next day. I've had trouble finding a recommended allergist in my area so I haven't had it confirmed yet. But she definitely was serious enough about it that I won't be taking any chances until I can absolutely rule it out... Though its honestly more likely I'm allergic than not. I thought I was fine eating it cooked, but that bothered me last time I tried too, so now I don't take any chances at all. :-(

Biggest bummer so far... Do you know how many adult beverages are made with pineapple juice???? (Redundant question really since you have most other fruits to deal with so I'm sure you feel my pain on that one!)

Nobody in my family has pineapple allergies but we do have other fruit allergies (citrus fruit, blueberries, cranberries, and the skins of fruits (ex. can eat apples if they're washed then the skin is cut off).

We've had great experiences at the Polynesian restaurants. We've always had chefs come out to our table to discuss our options. Separate fruit plates are brought for those with allergies and meals are made in an allergy area of the kitchen.

I don't know which sauces may contain pineapple (not just the dipping sauces but things like the sauce over the wings and dumplings, etc. I think that's what you'll need to ask the most questions about. The chefs will check. I've only eaten at SoA once but I know one of the chefs there and I reeeeeaaaaaly trust her. I've eaten at Kona and 'Ohana several times and we've had great experiences at both each time.

I assume the special 'Ohana juice contains pineapple but I don't know for sure. I know it contains citrus fruit so I haven't paid much attention since I know it's just off limits for my kids without having to look further.

I've been given ingredient lists for some of the bar drink mixes in the past. They'll also go over what they add. It'll take longer to order your drinks but they will do it.
