I thought this migh be something fun to start up on our trip in June. Ive never done this before nor do I have any pins. Any tips to get started and how does it work?
Any advice appreciated :goodvibes

Pin trading can be fun but it can also be frustrating. You should learn about scrappers and how to buy pins on eBay (use the link in my signature). Certain lanyards (teal) are only available for trades with children 12 and under, others anyone can trade with. There will also be "professional" traders in the parks, be wary but don't be afraid to talk to them and look at their pins, some have some really amazing collections. Some will try to get you to buy a pin to trade but you can simply say no.
to trade with a CM you simply ask to see their pins and if they have one you want you give them one of yours in trade. Keep in mind that CM's can only have 1 pin of each design on their lanyard so if you try to give them one they already have they will ask for something else.

Go to eBay and purchase sealed booster set pins that cost around $2/pin. That way you know they are authentic Disney pins. There are cheaper pins ($0.50/PC) sold in bulk on eBay but I can guarantee you that they are what's called scrapper or counterfeit pins. Now, the CMs at WDW or DL will trade with both pins because they're not allowed to reject a trade request as long as it meets the trading requirement. That's why most of the pins on CM lanyards now see scrappers :( But now that you know that I hope you would consider using only booster sets to trade so there will be less scrappers in the park instead of more. Have fun!

Yes have fun and don't spend any more money than you have to. More than likely you will be getting scrappers back. So buy in bulk at the best price possible. Just think that you are trading a scrapper for a scrapper.

Yesterday I filled my kids' Easter eggs with surprise pins for our July trip. One has a rabbit I don't recognize (maybe from Disney Jr?) and whoever gets it will get an extra treat.

Pins are a fun hobby; even the teens love it :)

I sincerely hope you meant buy in bulk sealed booster sets :)
Nobody wants to throw away money but I really hope new traders will help instead of adding into the scrappers problem.

There's no reason to support businesses who essentially steals from other businesses.
Which essentially is what those scrapper suppliers do.

I understand but even you agree that there are mainly scrappers on a cm lanyard. So in a sense all I am doing is trading a scrapper for a scrapper. When I say buy in bulk I do mean 50-75 cents a piece. Anything else is throwing money away. Just have fun and trade.

There's a noticeable quality difference between the legitimate Disney pins and scrapper pins. When we went to DL last year, my SIL got my DDs pins beforehand for them to trade in the parks. But the problem is that my SIL bought them in bulk for cheap on ebay and it was obvious that they were junk pins. So I left those scrapper pins at home and, honestly, just threw them out. Because they were weird colors, a couple of them didn't even have any color to them...they were just plain metal.

That's what I meant by I refuse to support businesses that basically steals from other business... :) Plus I started trading back in 2000 so pin trading is very near and dear to me. It saddens me to see all the crappy pins on CM lanyard. Especially for the people who buys 7-8$ pins and trade with scrappers :( I wish all traders would just help with the problem by refusing to buy, sell or trade scrappers instead of increasing the problem. I know it's a dream but I will continue to spread the word in hopes that it'll help.

Agreed. Although Disney actually make pins that don't have any paints at all... :) So those might be what the scrappers were copying. Then again some of those scrappers really are not great quality.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm on a soapbox but it really irks me to see all these crappy pins on CM lanyards for unsuspecting new traders... I wish Disney would crack down on it :(

If you buy 20 pins the difference between authentic vs. Scrappers on eBay would cost you $30... I don't think that's too bad.

To me pin trading is something fun to do while at the parks. And while you can get good deals on authentic pins, it's just cheaper and faster to buy lots on eBay. I don't think I'm adding to the problem, because the problem is so huge that it doesn't make a difference what I do. What bothers me more is not seeing cm lanyards with scrappers on it but knowing that someone paid 10 dollars for a pin and traded it for a pin that cost 50 cents. Disneyland is expensive as it is so if a family can enjoy themselves more by only spending only a few bucks more than go for it. So that is why when brought that is what I suggest. Nothing wrong with your feelings or advice, but I just disagree because as stated earlier I am almost assured that I am getting a scrapper back I have no problem trading one.

OP if you use the link in my signature you'll find pins at a great price and they will be legit, real, not scrappers.

Our trip last month was the first time we did it. It was fun. We all loved finding people to trade with. I will also warn you though, that they can fall off easily. Get the locking backs or put the ones you want to keep in your pocket or something.
I bought a bunch on ebay. I read about scrappers and so when I got them I read about all the different ways to tell if they are or not. From what I could tell most of them seemed ok. I took the couple that didn't out.

maybe because I'm on my iPad I can't find your signature for the link. Do you know where to find it or can you post the link

With iPads you need to hit the MORE button below on the far right (you're in FORUMS right now on the far left)
Select SETTINGS
Select READ FORUMS (or something like that)
Turn SIGNATURES on by sliding the button.

That should do it. I use SETTINGS at DIS all the time to increase the font size :)

You can find the thread on the Collector's Board but you may have to scroll down to find it. The Collector's Board is a sub-forum down below this one, it's actually towards the very bottom of the main page.

Is there pin trading at Downtown Disney CA? I know in FL there was tons of trading but I didn't know if they also do it in CA?

I can't afford to take the family to Disneyland so our best bet is trading pins.

Can someone confirm this for me?

Thanks in advance.
