Can someone please tell me what this is all about? DS who is 5 is super into pin collecting right now.... This may be of interest to him....

many cast members have lanyards or little square things with pins on them, you can trade up to 2 pins with them at any given time. You just pick the ones you like, and give them pins in exchange. There are a few that have tourquise color ones that are exclusively for kids.

Also sometimes cast members set up outside the pin store in Frontier land with large books of pins and they work the same way.

We buy big lots of pins on ebay to take and use as traders.

Perhaps this is a silly question... But do they have to be Disney pins that you would give to a CM?

My middle DD was never big on roller coasters, so she got into pin trading when she was little and has stayed with it for 8 years now. We are going to DL next month and I just bought 50 disney pins off ebay for $30. In the parks the least expensive ones are $6 each! If you think he might be interested do a search on ebay for "Disney pins" and get them there, and maybe let him pick a lanyard at the parks he likes for a souvineer. It has been years of fun for one of our DD's!

i collect pins and want to do pin trading but i love my pins so much i dont want to part with them :rotfl:

i did trade last trip cuz my whole lanyard is princess and the frog themed and the cast member at princess fantasy faire had a Tiana pin with the hidden mickey ( when a pin has a hidden mickey that means its cast member pin that has never been on sale and only available to CM) so i just had to get it! :)

That's another reason why I like getting pins for my DD off of ebay, they are usually random outdated unpopular pins that she doesn't mind trading at all. The ones we buy for her she hand picks so she really likes them and doesn't want to trade them. The only ones she's not allowed to trade are the ones we get her when we go on the Disney cruise, other than that she can trade whatever she wants.

thats a really good idea. do you buy single pins or like a group of pins? which is a better deal?

Usually the best deals are pin lots. Just be sure you're buying from a reputable seller; check the collectors board for tips too. We've been lucky at the Disney Store a few times getting pin sets on sale, but they very rarely have pins in the store anymore. Currently disneystore.com has a 3-pin set for $6 with Up pins- it's Russell, Karl, and Dug. I bought a couple of sets to trade, and 1 to keep, they're decent pins!
Pin trading can be quite addictive and expensive though- just beware!

^ ughh spam.

anyways, my sisters boyfriend just got into the pin thing. I saw lots of kids trading pins with CMs on my last trip...looked fun!

Buy them bulk.

I am currently waiting for a batch of 100 that I got for 64 bucks. Of those, we usually find about 5 to 10 that we like enough to keep.

64 cents a pin puts them right in my price range :)

My darn sister got me into Pin Trading when we went to DL this year. Very fun and kinda addictive (Also annoying when you are trying to rush to Indy when the park opens and on your way you have to stop at every cast member to look at pins :))

Anyway I found that trading with cast members was very fun and very easy (and some of the CMs had some fantastic stories to tell when trading) but I found the Pin Traders in Frontierland to be kinda scary (No Offense if you are a Frontierland pin trader on here) and one of them told a little kid to go and buy a $16:95 pin for one in the book. Poor little kid :(

Anyway it is a lot of fun :) and a few CMs have the "Kids Only" pin trading lanyards which seems pretty cool for the kids :)

I bought a couple of those sets too. It seemed like a pretty good deal since the website has free shipping for Labor Day. I have been buying single pins on Ebay but I don't spend more than $4 on a pin. I have been trying to buy ones I really like and ones I don't mind trading.

It is pretty addicting so I think it's a good idea to set a budget for yourself if you plan on buying pins at the parks.

Hi, I have more than 5 years collecting/tradding Disney pins, and I have learned that the false, pirates pirate: or better known as "scrappers" pins exist. For courteousness all CM have to accept any class of pin that they are offered them in a trade. But it is necessary to avoid to be cheated by bad sellers who say to sell pins as Disney "original" pins that it are not.
Please check this link to know who sellers on eBay a are more reliable sellers.

My daughter started pin trading & now has me involved. She wears the pins she loves & she gets me wear the ones she wants to trade. So whenever we see a CM with pins we both run over & check them out.
Dont know what she will do if I start collecting them!!:lmao:

My kids enjoy pin trading, but in a very laid back way. We only trade with cast members (and these are always really great interactions - they also tell your kids which pins to 'hold on to' if they happen to pick a special type). Done this way, it adds fun to the day, especially if we are waiting for something. We are always pleasantly surprised with the way Disney staff react...guys in suits slow right down to talk and to trade...

As your child is young, you might also find pin trading a good incentive! We bought our kids a new pin each day if things went smoothly ( I know, hard to believe that in the happiest place on earth kids might find things to dig their heels in about, but...:rotfl2:)

We don't get involved with the 'professional' type traders that set up around the resort, and we don't get into real 'collecting'. But it's fun anyway.

My kids love pin trading, mostly with cast members while waiting in line etc.
On our last trip my mom became obsessed with pin trading (Tigger pins only), one cast member told her she had "Pin-fluenza":rotfl2:

Well I hate to tell you both this but at these prices the pins you are buying are almost 100% guaranteed to be scrappers...in other words fake pins. The CM's will take them and then someone else will get the scrappers in trade. :( This is not good advice. However someone else provided the same link I have in my signature and that thread has tons of very very good advice. :) That thread has a list of good eBay sellers, people who do not sell scrappers and who do not charge an arm and a leg for their pins. :) I have a family of 4 traders, I buy pins from eBay to trade but I don't buy from scrapper sellers or from sellers who I think might be selling scrappers, instead I buy from sellers I trust (and yes I bought scrappers before I knew what they were and I still do sometimes to "test" a seller for future purchases) and trade those pins. I still pay less then I would buying from DL, on average my traders cost me $3 or so a pin, and they are legit, not scrappers so I can be confident what I'm trading is a good pin. :)

As for "professional" traders, at times DBF and I would stand at the tables with our book to trade, we did it mostly when the girls were off riding rides or when we just wanted/needed a quick break. All traders that stand at the tables are not out to "shark" you, some of us are genuinely nice people who just enjoy a good trade, so start with CM's but don't be afraid to talk with other traders as well. If someone rubs you wrong or you feel uncomfortable just walk away, but know that there are quite a few of us who do it for fun but still use the tables to display our available pins. :)

I buy a huge lot of Ebay before I head over to Disneyland and trade with cast members only, but the ones I get have never been that cheap :confused3

I was previously collecting random Princess pins but when I went over in September I started picking up some really cool Villan Pins and now I am obsessed with them.

I also collect really cool random ones I like, for example I picked up a WDW Castle that was massive, it was made out of metal and had a seperate part dangling from the castle that was blue with 'Walt Disney World' engraved into it. I will show you a picture once I get home :goodvibes
