I think you have to trade for the ones on the CM's lanyards. However, there would be nothing to stop you buying a pin that you don't care about, which you could then use to trade for the one you do want.
You can usually find pins in the sale, or on lanyard sets that you can then use to trade with others. My wife bought 5 Stitch Lanyard Sets in the sale for 5 euro's each last time we went, each had 4 or 5 pins on them and she traded them with Cast Members and got loads of really nice ones in return.
One bloke was very apprehensive to trade as he said that she had to trade a more expensive pin than a starter pin however he repented in the end when the CM next to him called him meanie (or similar words )

I'd love to do some trading when we go in Dec. Not sure if I'd be embarrassed to ask though... I suppose I can send Mia - they'll never say 'NO' to a child
A bit OT, but the Disney Store in London is selling pins now. Really cute ones but the guy said they weren't for trading. I bought a nice big one of Mickey and all his friends, limited edition for £5. The smaller ones are £3 so have a look if you go to the Disney Store.
The best bet Neta, for trading is to buy a grab bag of pins from ebay. You can buy a bag of 20 for like £25 then its a lot cheaper than buying ones in park to trade.
Trade in the morning with CM's they have much better pins then, have noticed that by the end of the day, they have stacks of whatever happens to be the cheapie pins on sale at the time.
One of the stores in Disney Village usually has a basket of cheap discontinued pins, well worth having a look in there.

Hi Ema - seems ages since the Christmas card I got from Mickey & co for the girls!! - as for pin trading, don't be shy and have a go - it's great!! Although some of the CMs in DLRP still need to brush up on pin trading etiquette, it's addictive and you'll love it!!
Also - the pins in the UK Disney store ARE for trading too! The UK stores won't be active in trading in the stores - so you can't trade with the CMs in there but we've been happily trading the pins with our American friends and they're serious pin experts and wouldn't trade if it wasn't 'allowed' etc.
Have fun in December - we're off to WDW this December - I'll send you an IM!!

I guess they mean that you can't walk in with one of your pins and trade for one of the Disney Store pins in order to get hold of them from the store - you have to buy them to get them.
They're just ordinary pins as far as I know - perfectly valid for trading once you've got them.
DLP are much more fussy about which pins they will trade that WDW. I would guess the new Disney store ones would be ok as I have heard they are fairly big.
