Pin Trading

I am going to WDW in a few weeks (yippee) and I was wondering if the pin trading was still a big deal. And if people like CM's traded pins other than Disney pins? Here in Louisville there are pins people collect every year at Derby time. They are different every year, and I was wondering if I brought some with me would the CM's trade for them. Do you think it is worth a try? TIA

Depends...

I have maintained a personal collection since 2000, and buy some for my son every now and then. Go to cheappins.com and buy some to trade with CMs.

It can be addictive and is actually harmful to some, if we get into compulsive collecting. It is a "big deal" among some people who dedicate time and monsy to nothing else but that.

But in balance, it is a very fun activity for everyone.

As long as the pins are Disney Pins and they are metal, you can trade them with the CM's. You cannot, however trade pins from the Derby or other parks with the CM's. You may be able to with other collectors, though.

Yes, pin trading is still a big deal down there!

A big deal? You might say that.

The CMs can not accept non-Disney pins unless they are in some way affiliated with Disney (such as, pins from the Rainforest Cafes or Planet Hollywood at WDW). That doesn't mean that CMs might not want to trade with you for a Kentucky Derby pin out of their personal collection. Be careful when doing this, though. CMs are not supposed to make personal trades when they are working. I wouldn't approach a CM to do a personal trade when they are working. Let them make the first offer; if they are interested, they will ask, and then you can arrange to meet the CM when they are not working.

And, like Eeyore0062 said, you can always see if other collectors would like to trade. Just put them in your book or on your lanyard and see if they draw any attention.

Be careful about the pins that you buy to trade. Just because a pin is metal doesn't make it automatically tradeable with a CM. The pin must be enamel, cloisonee, semi-cloisonee, or of the like. The pins that are "Spain" pins (or whatever they are referred to) are not tradeable. There are pin trading guidelines linked to in the FAQ.

We basically bought $6.50 pins and used them for trading with the cast members...

Be on the lookout for the lanyard pin series ... hard to find, can only find them on the lanyard of a cast member (not for sale anywhere), and they go like hotcakes. If you are interested in them (about 18 of them to date I think) try hitting CMs first thing in the morning, or throughout the day as CMs are just coming on duty.

We hit pay dirt over the past 2 weeks with the lanyard series pins. And yes, we are now officially hooked.
