My 7 and almost 5 year old are interested in pin trading on our upcoming trip. 7 year old especially, as he was intrigued with it on our last trip 2 years ago.

I've been reading the boards and have some questions I hope you can all help me with. I would prefer that my children trade authentic pins, not scrappers, especially since I plan to buy them authentic pins.

Now, from what I read, CM's have scrappers, from previous day trades, etc. My kids will have no idea what is authentic and what is a scrapper. I don't want to be hovering and telling them, "no, don't trade that one". I want this to be fun for them and for them to trade whatever they want.

What do you suggest? I guess I would hate to spend $$$$ on authentic pins to only leave with scrappers. Perhaps it is just the price I will have to pay for them to enjoy pin trading at this age.

Just buy some pins on ebay. 50 pins for around $30 delivered. Give them to your kids and let them trade them. They may be scrapers or they may not be. The kids may trade for scrapers or not. No matter, they will have fun. I personally can't tell the difference, and my kids havebeen trading for 5 years. Any way they will have fun.

50 pins for $30 will be scrappers.....

go to the eBay super thread here on the collector's board, find some reputable sellers and buy some pins, don't pay more than $2 per pin and try not to pay than $1 per pin. Give them to your kids, tell them to have fun. Don't dwell on whether or not they will get scrappers, we ALL get scrappers (I've been trading for 5 years and have tons of scrappers), it's not something you can really avoid unless you purchase every pin directly from Disney. Pin trade and enjoy it. That's what we do. As I said we get scrappers but we like the pins we get so we try not to worry about it too much. :)

I have a young daughter of my own who likes pin trading with her daddy. She doesn't care if they are scrappers or not. She only cares if she likes a pin. For me, I care a great deal and I tend to buy most of my pins direct from Disney, but even I will buy lots of pins once in a while just for the fun of trading with cast members and hoping I get something cool. The important thing is that your kids have fun. I try my best not to support scrappers, but it's tough. Let them have fun!

I overheard one of the pin trading cast members recently telling someone that she could only trade pins actually made by Disney, and how to recognize them. Of course, one time might not be significant, but I thought I'd mention it in case Disney's starting to take a hard stance on scrappers.

I wish they would take a harder stance on scrappers but they simply don't. The person may have been attempting to trade a non-Disney copyright pin and the CM's aren't allowed to trade for those. Again, I have plenty of those in my collection as well but I would never trade them to a CM because they are not authentic Disney pins. These are commonly referred to as "Fantasy Pins".
