Pin Trading Question (brand new at this!)?

My DD6 just received (finally!) her Kellogg's glow in the dark Mickey Icon green lanyard. We went to WDW for the first time last year and now we're going back in August.

We had bought her one pin with her name on it and then we got the Kellogg's free pin and now the lanyard. I bought a set of 13 pins online cheap just so she'd have some more on her lanyard when we go.

So my question is, will she be asked often by strangers (older than her or her age) to trade pins? Is there a certain etiquitte to saying, "no, I need to keep that one?"

Is there a proper way to ask CM's if they would trade a pin?

I guess my basic question is "How in the (Walt Disney) World does this pin trading stuff work?"

Thanks for your help in advance everyone!

Hi,

As far as the cast members all she has to do is ask them if she may look at their lanyard and if she sees one she likes ask to trade.

As far as guests it all depends on the person, some are nice, some are not. If she does not want to trade a pin someone has asked about , just have her say "No thank you, I want to keep that one". What you might want to do is put her keepers on one side and traders on the other side of the lanyard.

You might want to have a look at this website at the pins you have bought for her and see if any of them are pins in high demand. It is also fun to just look at all the Disney pins that have been made.

My son got very interested in pin trading when we were there in April so he is going to start on our July trip. I too ordered the Kelloggs lanyard and I figured he could redeem the coupon for the pin at the Store in Downtown Disney. I was wondering about your 13 pins tho. Is that the set from cheappins.com? I was thinking about ordering those for my son as a way to get started. Is that where you got yours? If not, where did you get them if you don't mind sharing? Thanks so much!!!

Word of warning on redeeming the free pin coupon. You may just save yourself time and trouble to mail it in. I tries our last two trips to redeem them and was never sucessful. I ended up mailing it in and they came in about a month.

Thank you for your replies!
Yes, I ordered the 13 pins from www.cheapins.com and I think they will arrive tomorrow.
We may not even trade any pins when we get to WDW but I wanted to get her a few more than just the couple we have.
I have the VISA Day One pin and she really wants to put it on her lanyard. I am not sure if I want to or not though. It's kind of a neat one to have since we got the card.

well, a lot of us have what we call "keepers" & "traders", which is pretty much self-explanitory. I like to keep my keepers on a LE (Limited Edition) lanyard @ the room i'm staying in while I wear my traders out to the parks. Depending on the pin movement at the time, you may or may not get a lot of pin traders coming up to you. If they want something you wanna keep, all you have to do is "just say no" nicely.

Hope this helped!

Just so you know, the Cheappins came in the mail yesterday. My DD6 was verrrry excited! There were two calendar pins from 2002 (too bad one of them wasn't from June when we went to WDW!) and there was a Mickey Florida pin. That one is neat because WDW is in Florida. I think we lucked out on that one. If we would have gotten Mickey Idaho, that would have been weird (we're from Illinois!)....

We got a gold Rocketeer pin that I think is neat because I liked that movie when it came out.

DD6 had a blast putting them on her lanyard!

I believe Disney has an official website (www.disneypintrading.com) that goes over the whole business of pintrading including etiquette and trading with CMs. I found it informative when I looked at it the first time.

If some stranger comes to you and asks you if you want to trade a pin that is kind of personal to you in some way then all that you have to say to that person is " I'm Sorry, I do not want to trade that pin, it's kind of personal to me." After that, they should just say "ok" and walk away or they might ask to trade for another one of your pins.
