Can anyone tell me how pin trading works when the little ones are shy? I was thinking about buying some pins for DS7 to try pin trading this trip but I'm not sure he would want to approach anyone to ask for a trade, even though I know he'd love the concept of trading. Anyone else have a shy guy? How did pin trading work (or not work) for you? Thanks!

If he is shy, pin trading would probably be good for him.

Pin trading is easy. Just bring pins and go up to any CM wearing a lanyard and ask to trade. In fact, some cast members wear lanyards that are just for trading with kids (green lanyards). It is a great oppotunity for him to interact with others. You can go with him to approach CMs to pin if he is apprehensive at first.

My kids trade every year and most of the time there is no talking involved (except thank-you at the end). They see the CM with the green lanyard, walk up holding theirs, and the CM knows what they want. The kids point to the one they want, the CM obliges, and then the exchange is made. Even the most bashful children can participate without the anxiety of having to speak. :goodvibes

At first, maybe you can do the talking. Take DS up to a cast member and ask to look at their pins. Say to DS "do you see any you like?" If he does, maybe he will point to one or tell you which one and then ask which one of his he would like to trade. Then he can give his to the CM and receive theirs in return. After one or two times, he'll start looking for CM's and asking to see their pins!

This is what parents did to me all the time when I was a CM. It really helps open dialogue. Some of the CMs will also try to open your son up a bit (make him comfortable) which might help too.

I really like this suggestion though! It's a non-threatening way for your DS to get in on the fun. Just remember though, they are addicting! Lol.

Our Ds had just turned 6 on our last visit. Normally a shy kid, we didn't think he would have any interest in the pins. Half way through the trip, he said he wanted a lanyard and a pin. We picked out a few figuring he would just wear it. He shocked us when we were talking to a CM and out of no where he asked to trade a pin! After that he would ask other CMs if we had interaction with them: at stores, waving the welcome mitts, etc.... Totally out of character for our boy- guess that's more Disney Magic!
