We'll be taking my mom (75 yrs old) with us in June and thought she and my 5 yr old boy/girl twins would have a fun time doing the "pin trading thing" together with the CMs. More for fun than serious collecting, but how do I get them started? I did buy a bunch of pins at TDS when they had that big sale a few months back and my DD has a pink lanyard from our last trip. Thought my DS would like a hat to put the pins on? Any advice would be much appreciated!!

We tried pin trading w/our kids (5 and 7) this past Oct., and they had a blast. One thing I did find is that they hated wearing those lanyards. After 2 days of that, what I did instead was each night I let the kids pick 4 pins that they were willing to part with the next day, and I would wrap them up in a plastic baggies so that none of the fronts were touching (didn't want them to get scratched :) ). Then, I would place them in their hip pack for the next day. This way they did not mind carrying them. Plus, it limited how much time they spent pin trading. If they had all of their pins with them, I think they would have traded all day LOL! They absolutely LOVED it! The CM's were all great with the kids too :)

Welcome to the Collectors board.

It sounds like you're off to a good start with the Disney Store pins for lanyard trading. If your son isn't into the idea of wearing a lanyard, the hat isn't a bad idea. You might make sure all the backs are rubber backs and not metal ones, as the rubber ones will be more comfortable.

I'm sure others will agree with this as well -- go see Scoop's seminar on pin trading. It's held Sunday thru Thursday at 1:00 PM at the Expo Hall in the Magic Kingdom. Scoop's a great guy with great advice for new pin traders young and old.

Hi!

My daughter is about that age (5). She loves to trade but sometimes falls in love with the "trader" pins and does not want to part with them.

I have had to have dups of the traders to get her to trade. Also, some of the best trading has taken place between her and I on a trip. I try to find out what pins she likes and slip to a pin stand and buy a few of them. During the trip, I add a few of them onto my lanyard. She will discover the new pins and the trading begins. This can help pass time in a ride queue or waiting for a show.

We each have a pin bag and in the evening, we sit on the bed and place our pins in their new homes. I also buy extra pins from the park to take home and continue the trading well past the vacation.

Hope some of this is helpful and you enjoy your vacation and trading. Good luck!

Chuck
