How many pins should they start with? My girls are 5 and 7 - I have 8 pins each (bought at the Disney shopping website last spring on clearance!) They are trading for fun only - are 8 pins enough to start with?

Also, where do I find the lanyards? Thanks for your help!!

I am not in favor of trading for fun only. My thought is trading should be a way to build up a collection of what you are interested in.

If you are going to start your children on pin trading, you will need a supply of at least 20 pins for each child. You will find that more than likely when they trade for a pin it will not be random but will be a pin they want to keep. And once they have done their eight trades and want to continue trading will you make them trade away pins they want to keep?

I hadn't really thought about them having to trade away a new pin that they just got. A friend that went last spring had just said how much fun her girls had trading pins with the cast members and that it kept them entertained while waiting in the longer lines. One of my daughters would be particular about what she trades/keeps - the other would just enjoy trading - she changes her mind about things by the minute!

My kids were 3 and 5 the last time we were in WDW (10 day trip). Being fairly new to pin trading, and doing it just for the fun of it, we initially purchased them each a lanyard and a boxed set containing 7 pins, and subsequently purchased an additional boxed set for the 5 year old. We found that we had to limit our 5 year old, so she wouldn't run out of pins, however she was easily convinced to trade away most pin she had traded for. Your 5 year old may act differently since she has an older sister. I plan on being well supplied for our next visit however.

My 4 year old trades 5 a day when we are there. I put his keepers in a bag and only let him wear ones he decided he doesn't want anymore. However I've been trading for 7 years now so I have lots of pins (<100) and he has claimed most of them as traders :) I guess he doesn't like tinkerbell! :rotfl:
