You may want to check out the Collectors board in the Just for Fun section. I think they have a FAQ thread and were most helpful when I was looking into it.

Not much to it. Just purchase some pins that appeal to you and (if you want) trade them for some that are more appealing. Trade with CMs with lanyards. Dont be shy to ask to take a closer look. I ony collect pins that appeal to me, price is not an issue. I have more fun that way and enjoy viewing them frequently. Have fun!
