talked about before but can someone fill me in on this. When you bring pins for your kids to trade, should they be Disney related or does it matter? The kids trade pins with CM's at the park right?

Yes they have to be Disney pins with the Disney copyright on them. If you go to the collectors board here on the DIS, you will find tons of info for new traders. In a nutshell as long as it is an official Disney pin, and the CM does not already have it on their lanyard you can trade with them. Hope that helped.

I know you didn't ask, but I'm giving advice based on experience...

We did a lot of trading on our first WDW trip last year. I hated spending $20 on a pack of 5 pins so DD could trade. This was the cheapest set that we found and DD didn't like, so she was happy to trade away. For our next trip, I have already figured out how to avoid this and still let DD & DS (who will be old enough this trip) pin trade. I have been on ebay and picking up pins (some as cheap as a $1). I have set a limit for the pins, including s&h, and have stuck to it. I have even found that some ebayers will give you a s&h discount on multiple pins. We probably have 30 pins and I've spent less then $70 altogether. Whatever we end up with DD & DS will have a set number of pins to trade each day at the park. We put the ones we like away, and trade till the rest are gone.

If you are considering pin trading, it is worth the investment to buy pin locks. It is a locking back that really keeps the pin secure...the regular backs seem to come off pretty easily and will also let you keep track of all those darn pins!

Where do you get the pin locks? DD lost a pin at DTD last time and it was not a scene that I would like to recreate.:(

The locking backs are available anywhere you find pins for sale - the pin carts, Pin Traders in Downtown Disney...Mousegear in Epcot, etc...they are in a little bag with the mini wrench you need to lock the backers down. Be careful not to overtighten them as the pin can actually break if you do.

They are a real MUST if you or your kids want to wear pins on your lanyard that are special. I lost a Mrs. Potato Head three times on Test Track one year!

You said you have to tighten them with a mini wrench? Once you put these backs on are you able to take them off again if you choose to trade? You might even just need to switch lanyards.
Also, does anyone know where you can get the medalions for the bottoms of the lanyards online? We need a couple.
Thanks!

Sure, you can take them off - with the same little wrench...so put it some place handy.

The medalions are also sold whereever pins are sold, but the biggest selections are in the major pin locations - they are Pin Traders in Downtown Disney, Uptown Jewelers on Main Street in Magic Kingdom, Fronteir Trading Post in FrontierLand in Magic Kingdom, the Sorcerer's Hat in MGM, Pin Central in Epcot (behind Spaceship Earth), Island Mercantile in Animal Kingdom.

The biggest selection will be Downtown Disney unless it's a park specific pin, then you'll want to see the "big" store in each park.

Enjoy!
