After our last trip to WDW, our 9 and 11 year are expecting similar pin trading mania? Does it exist at the parks, DTD, and the hotels? Does anyone know if the hotels keep pin trading books like at WDW?
I dont know about the books, but I know there is still pin trading in the parks. When we were last there tables were set up one evening by the Fronter Land Shootin Exposition but I have seen on here since then that they are now over in Tomorrowland. If they are going to have traders there at the tables just check the show time sheet that you get at the turnstiles when you enter, it will list them. Also if you see a CM with a lanyard on and there are pins on it they will trade with you too.
CM's all over DL and CA have their lanyards with them. You can go up to any of them and they will trade with you. Sometimes they are nice enough to even trade you 3 pins for 1!
They have pin trading at DLR like they do at WDW, except being a smaller set of parks, there are fewer opportunities. The CMs wear lanyards (same color schemes as WDW). I haven't seen as many pin books/boards as there were at WDW. There is a small pair of boards at the Emporium that are sometimes out, but not always. The main pin store at DCA also has a little book that is sometimes available.
We also do pin trading at disneyland and dca. And there are people with the trading books in tomorrow land in front of the toy story store (can't remember the name), and in frontier land in front of the pin store near the shooting gallery.
All three Disney hotels do pin trading as well. The DLH has the biggest board, but there's a board at GCH and a couple of lanyards at PPH. There's also usually a plush animal with a lanyard in the little store in the DLH. Star Traders (store that you exit into from Star Tours) has a pin board at the checkout by the doors heading out facing towards Astro Blasters. We've discovered that a fair number of stores have plush animals with lanyards around their necks, espcially in DCA. Sometimes they're not obvious, just ask a CM if that store has one.
There's a big pin board that's in Big Thunder Ranch Fri-Sat (at least that's when it was there end of Jan/beginning of Feb), which they moved into the pin store in Frontierland at other times. I've found the best time to see lots of cast lanyards in one place is right when DL opens, especially if they don't let people onto Main St first. The street will be lined with CMs, and a lot of them will have pins. There's a couple of very knowledgeable and helpful CMs with lanyards we've seen a few times in front of the Tiki Room, as well as at guest information.
DTD doesn't have as much as WDW does, but the people who work the DVC booths usually have lanyards. Have a good trip

Just so that the OP knows, these folks are not CMs. They do not have to trade with you nor do they have to adhere to the Disney trading guidelines (e.g., one pin for one pin). I'm sure some of them are nice folks, but I would be cautious when approaching them for a trade because for many of them this is a business so they're out to get the most valuable/expensive pins possible from you.
As the PP mentioned, there is a pin "wheel" at the Frontierland store. It has several dozen pins.
