I'm very new to pin trading, even though I live in central Florida, so forgive me if I ask dumb questions.

The official pin trading guidelines say that certain pin sets have to be traded as sets. Does this apply to a series of pins? For example, I bought several cast member pins from ebay so that my daughter can trade them. Do all the pins in a series have to be traded as a set?

We're not looking to make any money as collectors doing this -- my daughter (she's 4) saw the princess lanyard set a few months ago and proclaimed that she had died and gone to heaven. We finally bought it for her, and she's had an amazing time trading with CMs. Now my dh is itching to do the same, but doesn't want to trade any pins that have personal meaning to him. pirate:

First welcome to our crazy world and Second, there are no dumb questions.

I'll try to explain, but it may be hard/confusing. The answer to your question is no you don't have to have all the pins in a series to trade with a CM. For example, there is a series of pins being sold now of antique Disney toys. One comes out every month. There are 12 pins in the series, but only 8 have been issued. Each pin stands by itself.

A set is where you can buy all the pins at the same time and they are incomplete without each other. An example of this is the Animal print 2000 set. All four pins were sold on one card. Each number 2,0,0,0 had a different animal print (zebra, giraffe, etc.)
People started trading the 2 for a lanyard pin, a 0 for a second pin, etc. Noboby then wanted to trade them off the lanyards.
So Disney established this rule.

Hope this helps. As an observation, I really don't think you want to trade a Cast Member pin onto a lanyard. Cast Member pins are only sold to CMs at the Company D store and are hard to get.
You might wish to check pinpics to see the desirability of the pin (i.e. how many people have it to trade/how many want it.) My rule of thumb is if more people have it for trade than want it, then I will consider it lanyard fodder.

Thanks. That makes perfect sense about the sets.

As for the CM pins, maybe I'm using the wrong term . . . they are Cast Lanyard Series pins, like the Pin 25305: WDW - Cast Lanyard Series 2 (Safari Snapshots #3). These seem to be pretty cheap in lots on ebay.

There is a seller on ebay named pinscheap that sells lots for $2 each -- are these tradeable, or is this too good to be true?

Of course, I did end up with a "Fantasy Pin" this way (before I looked at PinPics), but it's such a great pin that it makes me laugh out loud. ("Fin Traders")

I see that many of you frequent WDW and pin stations -- I wish I would have seen this 2 weeks ago because we stayed at All Star Sports for a few days post-Charley to wait out the power outage. :p

Yes, Lanyard pins are different from CM pins. Lanyard pins can only be gotten by trading off a CM lanyard. Again, I'd check pinpics before trading a lanyard pin onto a lanyard, some are hard to get and you might do better trading with someone else who is hunting for that pin.

If you really really want to meet us, you only have to wait 14 days!

Disney holds the biggest pin event of the year the second week in Sept. So most of us will be there. We are having dinner at Chef Mickey's on Friday night (see another post about Dinner with Ed to sign up). Also see the posts about the Great Pin Adventure to find out where we'll be and when. It still may not be too late to sign up for the event (go to Disney.com pintrading section)

Thanks again. :) I actually looked at the Sept. event site yesterday (I've been lurking here for a week or so), but $75 is a little steep for me as a newbie. We go to WDW most weekends, so I thought we'd ease into this first.

Right now, seeing my dd get excited when she traded a duplicate princess pin for a mickey head was the best event of the day, anyway. princess:

The $75 is high (last year it was <$55) (and some events have been over $100) but that doesn't have to stop you.
Great Pin Adventure is FREE and there are activities on Saturday including a pin trading session at Pop Century, I think.

Welcome to the DIS Collectors Board and to the Wacky World of Pintrading!

Dave's suggestion is <b>super!</b>

If you come to the Great Pin Adventure on Saturday night (September 11th) at the Pop Century eatery, you will have an unusual opportunity for a wonderful introduction to pintrading, and to many of the regular posters on this board.

Two of our moderators, AZJazzyJ (Jeff) and MeanLaureen (Lauri) are hosting the third Great Pin Adventure. A silly excuse for games, trading, entertainment, and fun!

You will also find a friendly community of pintraders (and collectors) who will be happy to answer questions about any aspect of this hobby. ::yes::

Hope you can join us!
