I don't have a Pilot, but I do have a 2002 Cr-V and I LOVE IT! I would go with the Honda. Mine has never been in the shop for anything but regular oil changes, and I have put 32,000 miles on it in 14 months. I would go Honda

YEAH HONDA! I have a CRV, as well. This is my 3rd Honda and have loved every one!

My mom and dad have an Envoy and they loved it until one of the headlights burned out. They are Halogen. Took it back to the dealer to get it repaired since you can be shocked if you don't know how to do it. It cost $700 to replace one light. After my dad flipped out over the cost, the service department secretary said they called GMC and were told that it is really unusual for one of them to burn out. Supposedly only two other vehicles in all the world had this happen. Yeah, right!?!? Well guess what, two months later the other one burned out. Now guess what GMC said. This was the 4th one they've ever heard of burning out. Guess mom and dad were the lucky 3rd and 4th Envoy owners. I know this kind of thing can happen with any vehicle, just thought I'd mention it.

Just a little advice. I cant tell you about the honda pilot but my DBIL works for GMC. My DH and I were looking for a new SUV and liked the looks of the Envoy and Trailblazer. Well he said RUN RUN RUN AWAY FROM THEM!!! They have major engine problems not all of them but some of them do they have already had some qualify for the lemon law!!! It seems the lining in the piston's can be sucked into the engine!!! which basically blows the engine! We wound up buying a Ford Explorer they are a little Ho Hum but it handles awesome and it is great on gas and it has auto 4-wheel drive so if one wheel slips it automatically kicks into 4- wheel, it has leather interior power everything a CD changer. And my GMC employed DBIL approved! He also said that suburbans yukons and tahoes have all been excellent vehicles But we just didnt have the money for one of those guys!!! Even used ones with reasonable miles were very expensive!! So they hold their value really well. So maybe go for the Honda. If you want to buy american all you need to do is look at the sticker on the door jamb of the vehicle and it will tell you which plant it came from. Good Luck

We also have a 2002 CR-V, and we've put over 40,000 miles on it in 17 months.
This is our second one. Previously we had a 1999 CR-V, and other than oil changes and a new set of tires- the only reason anything was ever replaced on it was because the dome light bulb blew out.

We traded it in on this one after owning it for 34 months........ with over 99,900 miles on it.

AND, we just bought a used Honda Civic for DH to use when he has to go to school. A 1999 with less than 38,000 miles on it, and it is great for tooling around the city!!

Good luck, whatever you decide!!

Of what great NEED is an suv? Must everyone drive a truck to be "safe?" The mid-east came to the States almost two Septembers ago and people still crave gas-guzzling vehicles. There are great problems with the ozone layer and our children's future is at stake. I just don't get it.

Sorry all, this is a real sore point for me...
Bicycle - as many miles as you can go after you drink a gallon. Few people buy a specific car because they NEED it. No different for a Solara or a HUMMER. Some are more realistic than others but the choice is up to the buyer, as it should be. The only reason to be sore is if you're hit by one while crossing the street.

Dis4me,

My sebring was a 2001 and also a convertible. I had taken it in to have the transmission worked on several times, but they could never find anything wrong. One time I took it in with the engine light on and the rpm's reving high and car would go no faster than 20 mph. They kept it for a couple of days and then called and said they couldn't find anything wrong. The engine light didn't even come on for them. So I went to pick it up and as soon as I started the car up it lunged like it was going to take off on its own and the engine light came on. Left the car running and walked right back into the service center and personally escorted them to see the engine light was on. They then kept it another couple of days and replaced some switch. I was beginning to think I was the crazy one since it only seemed to act up when me or my husband were driving. As much as I liked my car it was getting so that I was afraid to drive it any distance by myself.

As it is for me, we rely on GM as our major source of income. We have great cars that have held up well, you might want to give them another try.:D

I have a 2000 CR-V and absolutely love it. Last fall during an oil change at the dealership we test drove the Pilot and it was tough to leave without it. Every now and then I think about trading. There is no need for me to have it, I just want it. :)

Though there have been improvements, GM is still 5-10 years or more behind Honda and Toyota. I'll buy another GM when it's just as good, gas efficient, cheap and reliable as Honda or Toyota or if it's thousands cheaper and meets my needs. So far neither seem to be happening.

BUY AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Envoy is an excellent vehicle, great looks, handling, you won't regret your decision.

Ditto that, you can tell we live in Michigan where people live and die American cars. You wouldn't catch me driving a foreign car. Buy American, save an American's job.

I am not bashing Gm when I said my BIL worked for GMC i didnt mean a dealership He actually works at a GM plant And he said both the Envoy and Trailblazer have problems. You choose a car on your personal preference and what you need it for. There are GM vehicle's that cant be beat like the suburban the yukon or the tahoe as far as engine power and tourqe for there class of vehicle they cant be beat you could pull your boat or trailer down the road with ease and not suck up as much gas. But if you take a honda or toyota and try to tow that same trailer you are gonna suck gas and have rear and tranny problems down the road. There are good gm vehicles there are good ford vehicles there are good honda's and toyota's, just the same as there is bad. Just a piece of advice stay away from new models of vehicles for at least the first 3 years they are out until the manufactures have worked out all the kinks. Like the Envoy got great reviews from car and driver when it first came out But each manufaturer sends their best example for these reviews. and sometimes the bugs cant be worked out or they become too costly to work out. That is why lincoln quit production on the blackwood and ford stopped making the excursion! Look at the tried and true models that have been around a few years those cars are old hat for the manufactures ( unless they majorely change something!! ) Good luck we all have our preferences on what we like to drive!! We have a ford explorer and a ford F-450 diesel dually  that we use to pull our 8 horse trailer there is just no other truck out there with the same tourqe ( power to pull ) and we also like the look of it;)

We also have a really nice 97 chevy Z28 that has 165,000 miles on it  That we have only had to replace the clutch in ( which is the same as basic maintenance ) and it runs just as strong as it did in 1997 when we drove it off the lot!!

I own a 2001 Acura MDX, which is what they based on the Pilot on. I absolutely LOVE my MDX, and it gets 25 mpg when I take it on a road trip. I get about 18 mpg when running it in town only, which is very rare. I usually average about 21-22 mpg when doing a combo of city and highway driving. I have had no problems with it, and 2001 was the first year they came out with the MDX.

A woman our office bought a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer about 6 months ago, and it goes in the shop for various problems at least once a month. I don't know if she just got a lemon, or if that is indicative of GM vehicles.

Say what you will about American vs. foreign, but I need good reliable transportation, and Honda has always provided that for me. Before I owned the MDX, I had 2 Honda Accords that were great. I will probably never buy American until they can complete with the quality of the Japanese cars.

Another Honda lover here! I own a 2001 Accord with only 12000 miles on it and can't wait till I can trade it in on a Pilot. I love them only I am waiting till it comes out with a moonroof. My whole family owns Hondas and we swear by them :p

That is great! there are trailblazers and envoys out there that run great. and blackwoods and excursions and navigators and rav 4's and so on so forth..... But buying a new model in its first year of production you take a risk at getting a lemon. maybe not a huge risk with some models. But there is still a chance.

Interesting thread! We'll be buying a gas guzzler in December, so I just started looking at the mid-sized SUVs. (And, we have an excuse - being military, we want something we can hitch my car to on the long moving trips so we don't both have to drive.) DH has a Saturn lease, so we know we'll get some offers from GM to save a bit if we stay with a GM car. But I hate limiting our selections from the start! Of course, DH being a pilot, he refuses to consider an Aviator or Pilot, because only the wannabes drive those.
