Pier One Imports Going Out of Business

News articles are just appearing. This is sad but not surprising. These stores have been struggling and the coronary virus closures have apparently finished it off.

I used to enjoy Pier 1, but past few years it's pretty much been over priced items you can find else where for a lot less. We'd go in every now and then and leave shrugging our shoulders wondering why we went in again.

JC Penny, filed bankruptcy, closing 240 stores. Neiman Marcus and J Crew filed last week.

None of those liquidating yet.

Got an email from JC Jenney saying they were reorganizing and not closing......we'll see.
They have reorganized before and been in trouble.

Our pier 1 closed here in Canada closed beginning of Feb I think. Like stuff there but to expensive for me.

I don't think I've bought anything at a Pier 1 for over 20 years. Might have been a photo frame plus a matte that I still use for my college diploma. Strangely enough (given their name) I don't believe either item was imported.

I guess they started off as a local retailer in the San Francisco Bay Area called Cost Plus Imports. And that's really confusing because they're not related to Cost Plus (World Market) even though that was their closest competitor and once a takeover target of Pier 1.

I used to love going to Cost Plus at Fisherman's Wharf, I could spend hours in there. They always had some of the most unique things that I couldn't find anywhere else. Now it' all the same made in china stuff all over.

We have a Pier One about a mile from my house and I’ve never been in it. 😬

Depends. They at least have food and beverages. I found some oddball things there including little bottles of Tabasco Sauce, candies, etc. I don't recall Pier 1 having any kind of food.

Cost Plus HQ used to be in Oakland. I remember getting off the freeway a few times and I saw their big sign on the side of one of their buildings. They didn't move far though - just to Alameda. Bed, Bath, and Beyond owns them now, but Cost Plus still maintains a HQ in the Bay Area.

@bcla I should have said that my "I used to" was back in the 80s and early 90s ;) I went in a Cost Plus World... seemed to sanitized and boring.

The Pier 1 and JCP announcements were no surprise here. Both of our local Pier 1 stores closed over a year ago and the retail space has already been refilled with new businesses. The JCP at the local mall has been dangling by a thread for a couple of years now, right along with the Sears anchor store. Pretty sure Macy's is the only anchor store that was still seeing a decent amount of business before the early part of this year. It's sad, but the whole department store model has been struggling to survive for a long time.

I'm shocked Pier 1 made it this long. I worked for them back in the late 90s and I left there feeling like they wouldn't make it another year.
