We are taking the long slow way to Hilton Head Island this summer and stopping to check out Dollywood of all places... Anyway we are looking to rent a cabin in the Pidgeon Forge/Gatilinburg area and I am over whelmed with the choices..

Cabin cabins everywhere!!! (every single one with at least one hottub, and a pool table, I hope they got a deal)

Sooooooo I am turning to you great DISers for guidence...

We would like... Near stuff, but not with the cabins right on top of each other... secluded but not overly remote... no more than 20 minutes from Dollywood

Near water... stream, lake (fishing?) A pool... maybe at the main lodge? not a must...

Air conditioning??? Is this even needed (mid July?)

Any tips you have I will take thanks bunches!!!

I can only advocate the place I stayed, which was in Townsend. It's a bit more than 20 minutes from Dollywood, and we deliberately stayed that far away because we found most everything closer in was (1) too expensive; (2) too fake-rural instead of actually secluded; and (3) too far from Cade Cove, where we wanted to do some serious hiking.

This place was GREAT:

I think we stayed in the "Eagle's Nest" cabin... not sure though. It does have a pool, but no lodge. It was immaculate inside. And utterly beautiful outside.

Try OakHavenResort.com the cabins are new. They are located in Sevierville, close enough but not in the middle of everything.

No advice on the cabin situation as we've always stayed in hotels/motels.

About needing an air conditioner for July.... YES! It does get pretty steamy during the summer. In fact, I avoid Pigeon Forge during the summer because of how hot it is (I can't take the heat!).

Have Fun. :sunny:

My boss and her family stayed at Oakhaven Resort (oakhavenresort.com) and enjoyed it very much. Not sure about the air conditioning though. Personally, it would be a must for me.

We used and loved Mountain Rentals of Gatlinburg. We stayed ina cabin in Gatlinburg, but very near Pigeon Forge. It was soooo nice and they had great deals. They often have the 4th night free or the 3rd night 1/2 off. Sometimes the 7th night free as well. their website is www.mountainchalet.com (or maybe moutainchalets.com)

A second vote for Mountain Rentals. DH's family has been going for over 20 years and has used this company. They have excellent customer service :goodvibes

Laurie :)

I live 1 hour from Dollywood and it's hotter than HADES in July! But I've never heard of a cabin without air conditioning.

You probably already know this, but Dollywood also has a water park next door called Splash Country. We have season passes to both parks every year. Splash Country is awesome. I saw a special once on the Travel Channel about water parks and Splash Country made it to the top 10. Be prepared for very crowded conditions, though. If you can visit either park during the week, it may be a little less crowded.

Enjoy your visit to East Tennessee!!

On piece of advice I have is make that the cabin you rent is serviced by the company you are renting from. In the fall of 2003 my parents rented a small cabin for the 2 of them from one of the larger companies and the cabin for very nice and well maintained. They decided the following year to rent a larger one, from the same company ,for the whole family for a family vacation. The larger cabin, was only rented through the rental company, but was owned and maintained bya seperate person. The larger cabin, had mold large amounts of mold in the shower, the curtain was stuck together with it. There were other issues, when we complained to the company we rented from the didn't do anything to correct the problem.

I am just getting back to the thread... sorry.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have looked at them all and I am still going crazy. I think just need to call and talk to someone... since ideally we would like 2 cabins near each othter (but not on top of each other)

As for Dollywood, we would hit that on Friday and save Saturday for exploring the wonder Smokey Mountians!!! I suppose even the hiking trails will be crowded at that time of the year... lol

DH's family reunion will be at Hidden Mountain Resort in Sevierville, TN. Haven't been there yet, but my in-laws checked it out last fall and said it was pretty nice.

Here's thier website:

If you are looking for a cabin that can sleep up to six people, this place rocks...

bearruncabins(dot)com

This place has a hot tub, mountain view, and a fireplace in the master bedroom. The cabin is awesome and for the price. Many of the cabins in the area are managed by cabin rental comapanies and they are charging owners 40% to rent them out. The rental companies are also suppose to address issues mentioned above as thay charge the owners to clean the cabins.

Bear Run is owner maintained and managed and they do a good job.

Hope this helps:)

Here are two recommendations for you.

This first one sounds great. It is not far from DollyWood.... As close to the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg as you can get in Pigeon Forge, if I am reading the directions correctly.

www.sherwoodforestresort.com

Sherwood Forest Resort is a gated, community resort offering affordable, luxury log cabins in the heart of Pigeon Forge and adjacent to the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Currently featuring cabins from 1 to 7 bedrooms (with larger cabins coming soon), a unique 8,000 square foot Conference Center, on-site swimming pool, and much more, Sherwood Forest Resort is the place for unique Smoky Mountain experiences. Our Pigeon Forge cabin rentals and Smoky Mountain Cabins are so convenient to all the area attractions, shopping, and restaurants, yet you’ll feel like you’re far away from it all. Call 1.888.774.4535 today for your Pigeon Forge cabin vacation.

Also, we rented a honeymoon cabin thru Fontaine's Rentals. (20 years ago on Wednesday!)
These cabins are located up between Gatlinburg and the I-40 cosby/newport exit. They are behind the gates of the Bent Creek Golf resort. (so, they are not at Pigeon Forge, but close to hop back on I-40 to continue your trip.

I am not sure about Hidden Mountain, as I have not been there. But, I think I have heard good reviews of this resort. I would check out their web site.

Personally, I would probably recommend a cabin that is a part of a resort or complex, instead of isolated out on a back road. I would want to be sure that the cabins are being managed and maintained by a reputable outfit, instead of just a rental agency for any kind of cabin anywhere in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. That way, you might also have access to amenities, pool(s) etc...

A trip over to Cades Cove, started early in the cool of the morning is GREAT! At the intersection where you turn towards Cades Cove, outside of Townsend, is the perfect swimming hole on the creek. Also, you could take a picnic and stop at Chimney Tops picnic area next to a big rushing mountain creek, located halfway up the Smoky Mountains on 441.

DollyWood can be great, if you know what things are good to hit while there. And, as another poster mentioned Dolly's Splash Country would be wonderful for a hot day.

YES, you will need air conditioning... the heat and humidity in the South here can be stifling. ;)

Hope you have a wonderful visit to this area and the Smokies!

We prefer to stay in Pigeon Forge and the Wear Valley area. Last couple of years we rented from cove mountain. The most recent cabin being Sweeter With Tyme. Good cabin, behind a gate but still felt a bit secluded.

The Dogwood Farms is a good area as well.

Here is where not to stay: The Preserve. The cabins are 10ft apart and high up on the mountain. So high that one caught fire a few years ago and it took out the surrounding cabins as well. The turns going up to it included some blind "I sure hope no one is coming" ones. :scared:

Here is a link http://www.wearsvalleyhomes.com/communities/wearsvalley/wears-valley-developments.php

At the bottom of the page, it shows where some of the subdivisions are. It helps a bit when you are trying to get a feel for the area.

The cabin choices are overwhelming. I know because I am usually the one nominated to find one each year. It makes my head hurt. Look close at the photos. Can you see rooftops, roads, someone else's front porch?

Also, look close at the rental agreements. Some want all the cash up front. Some a deposit. Some $50. cleaning fee, some a $25.

Hope this helps. We love the area and go almost every summer. This year is a Disney year but next year we are back to the cabin!

We also rented our honeymoon cabin from Fontaines, 18 years ago. Ours was Luv n Ewe, all sheep themed . We stayed somewhere else in that same areaa few years back, starting to show it's age. Our last visit to Gatlinburg we stayed at Gatlinburg Falls, super nice new resort located really close to Damons, on the way toward Pigeon Forge.

http://www.cabinsofthesmokymountains.com/ we rented Our Time, pet friendly 1 bedroom with upstairs loft playroom, looked exactly as pictured.

Hey, our Fontaine's cabin was Rustic Charm.

We actually looked it up a few weeks ago, thinking of our anniversary.
We can't make it back. But the cabin looks mostly the same. Floor to ceiling picture windows, whirlpool tub next to the king sized waterbed. They have actually build a brand new large deck with full sized hot-tub on it! :thumbsup2

Yes, I imagine these properties are a bit 'dated', but it looked nice, and it would be amazing to spend our 20th in our honeymoon cabin.

To the OP:
I continue to recommend the cabin resort properties. Not just 'abc cabin rentals'. It looks like several good ones have been mentioned here! :thumbsup2

I just pulled up www.mypigeonforge.com
and a few others that I have heard of jumped out at me.

Edited to add: Sorry, I didn't type these names right....
They are
Bentwood Ridge
Eagles Ridge

And I have seen advertisements for something like Sunset Cottages. But, the one listing that kind of matches sounds more like a rental agency, not a resort.

Happy Planning!

WE wanted to stay in Luv n ewe that trip but there was no room for the girls, lol. I can't remember the name of the one we stayed in, but it was also in Cobbly Nob.

ETA, hah, they actually added an extra bed upstairs on ours now, it's a two bedroom now! Too funny
