Took this picture to make sure I could put everything back together again properly. It's the motor that rotates by stone in my pizza oven. It used to run on 2 D batteries or an AC adapter that I never bought and which is no longer for sale. I rewired it to take power via a USB-C port, so I can plug in a standard power brick, because who wouldn't want their pizza oven to be USB-C compatible?
Thanks. I think my favorite hillbilly electronic hack was when we took the boys on a canoe trip down the Buffalo River back in '07. We wanted them to enjoy the outdoors, but still have some of their electronic comforts from home. They loved playing with their Nintendo DSes, but there were no way the batteries in them would last for the duration of the trip. This was in the days before USB charging or power bricks, so we created a homebrew solution. We cut the cord from a knock-off DS charger and wired it into a lantern style flashlight. My assumption was that the nominally 6 volts from the lantern battery would be close enough to the expected 5.5 volts from the charge. It worked like a charm. I'm sure that some naturalist parents were appalled, but the kids learned that our family solves problems with technology. Now, they're techies - one with a job at a major software company and the other studying comp sci in college. And both love the outdoors.Doesn't look that different from the drive system in the Dumbo models or even the Mark VII monorail.Nowadays it has to be USB-C *and* it has to have a microcontroller just because.
Nice engineering work!
