“We’re All Mad Here”
March 17, 2016

There are many many classic images at Disneyland. The Castle without a doubt, the Matterhorn, the entrance to Tomorrowland, Small World, the Rivers of America with the Mark Twain, and of course the TeaCups.

"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

I like the guy with the Lightsaber in the background! (top-left). :-)

Alice in the Wonderland of Death Valley

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.
'I don't much care where -' said Alice.
'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.”

― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

I try to only share, and comment on, images made at Disneyland, Downtown Disney, or Disney California Adventure, and other Disney parks. But this recent image is directly inspired by visits to Disneyland and the Disney adaptation (movie) of Alice In Wonderland.

Alice In Wonderland, Fantasyland, Tea Cups… some of the more magical things at Disneyland. And Alice In Wonderland in particular, do you know the story? Both the original Lewis Carroll novel from 1865, no that’s not a typo, and the 1951 Walt Disney adaptation are well, just a little odd. Alice eating mushrooms and shrinking, chasing a white rabbit and drinking some strange potion marked “Drink Me”. We all think Alice and the other characters in the story are “cute”, but it almost surprises me that Walt Disney would have taken on this original story and incorporate it into not only the Disney movie world but the very fabric of his park - Disneyland.

After our recent visit, March 17th and while shooting the Tea Cups at night (posted here) I started thinking about a photograph I waned to make.

Here “Alice” wonders exactly where she is and where she should go. Little does she know, she is more than 200 feet below sea level in the middle of Death Valley, CA near the area called “Bad Water”.
