Has anyone made a Disney picture communication book for their autistic child? If so how did you set it up and what was in it? Thanks! We are going to Disney soon and I would like to make this for my son. He is 2 and has autism :)

I have the pictures if you want them in a word document... PM me your email address

Others have created other communication books/systems.

PM sent thank you! I will do a search for other ideas. I didn't think about it till after I posted. I hope to hear more ideas. We are new to this so I need help.

What exactly do you want the book to say or what do you want to have in it?

I'm working on a book for my ds who is about 1 1/2 -2 cognitively (16 chronologically) to help him have more of an idea ahead of time what we'll do each day. It will likely be in the format of a story book. So far I'm just working on collecting pictures of the different attractions; in most I'm just getting the signs or fronts of the buildings. I'm hoping he can recognize them when he sees them and this will give him an idea of what is coming next. We'll do lots of talking about it as well. I'm going to do each day/park in an 8x8 scrapbook. That way it's easy to rearrange attractions if we change the order we're going to do things in. I'm also going to make him an autograph book that has pictures of the characters on each page that they'll sign. That way the signature will hopefully mean more to him. I will also likely have room on an opposite page for a picture of him with each character. I'm thinking of doing the same thing for each attraction. I'm just in the planning stages right now. I'll post pictures when I get underway.

Well we will be going to all the parks and waterparks. We also have ADR's. I would like to do like you are doing. I am not sure if I should add all the rides or just the one he will ride. I have a DD10 and DD6 so we will be going to other rides he can not ride. I would like for him to see what we will be going to next. I love the idea of the 8x8 scrapbook. We would need to rearrange the pic too if we go out of order, which I know we will. That is a great idea about the autograph book. I didn't think about that it would be more meaningful for my son with the pictures. My son has just been diagnosed with Autism. Even though we have always knew something was up. So I am not creative yet but I am and want to learn for him. Well, I believe I saw some autographs pages with pic on the Dis Creative boards. I thank you for your help and I can't wait to see your pic.

If you go to post #3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread, you will find some helpful links under Communication Devices, PECs. Some of them might not be just what you are looking for, but should be helpful - especially the link to mousescrapper's book that she made for her son. It will probably be much higher level than what you are thinking of, but should help with ideas.

The disABILITIES FAQs thread is near the top of the thread list for this board or you can use the link in my signature.

Here's the text for our travel day and our arrival day at DW for my son:

"We are going to Disney World in Florida.
On Sunday afternoon, Mom, Heather and I will drive in our van to Seattle. It will take about 3 hours to get there.
We will go to the Seattle airport. Mom says we’ve been there before when we’ve gone somewhere in an airplane.
We will go to a booth to check in and send our luggage to the plane. We might have to wait awhile for our turn.
Once we’ve checked in, Mom, Heather and I will go through security. First, Mom and Heather will put all of our stuff on a belt so it can go through an xray machine to make sure there is nothing unsafe in it.
Then Mom and Heather will take turns walking through the scanning booth. One of them will stay with me all the time.
Then it will be my turn. They will use something called a wand to check to see if I am carrying anything dangerous. The alarm might go off because of the metal in my back. Mom will stay with me while they check me. They will also look at my feeding pump and anything else on the back of my chair.
It might take a long time to go through security because we have so much stuff.
After that, we will go find the right gate for our airplane. We are flying on an Alaska Air plane. We will wait there until it is time to board the airplane. Mom says I might be able to see our plane from the window while we wait. It will be very late by the time we get on our airplane.
When the plane is ready, the airline attendant will help us go to the plane. We will go on first or almost first as it takes a long time to get me into my seat.
I will sit in my chair until the door of the airplane. Then I will go into a special chair that is small enough to go down the aisle of the airplane. They will use a lift to get me into the chair and then into my seat on the plane. The flight attendant will take my chair to a special place on the plane.
Once I’m settled in my seat, mom and Heather will sit down too. Then it will be time for the other people to come on to the airplane.
When everyone is on the plane and the pilots are ready we will back up and then get ready to take off. The plane will go very fast until we are in the air.
Because it will be very late when we leave, mom will give me my bedtime medications and will tell me to try and go to sleep. We will fly all night.
When it is morning we will be in Florida.
After we land, we will stay in our seats until all the other people have left. Then there will be room for the flight attendants to bring me the special chair and get me out of my seat. My wheelchair will be waiting at the door of the airplane.
Once we’re off the plane we will go to a special area called Magical Express. That’s where people who are going to Disney World go. The people that work there will make sure our suitcases get sent to our hotel.
We will go on a special Magical Express bus to our hotel. It will take a little while to get to the hotel. We will see palm trees out the window as we go. It will be very hot out.
We are staying at the All Star Sports Resort. It is very large and has many buildings. There are 5 main sections of the resort. They are the Football, Baseball, Tennis, Basketball and Surf.
Mom says we will be staying in the Football section. We will probably be in the Touchdown building. There will be a large football outside this section as well as lots of other big football themed decorations.
We will get off the bus and go in to the hotel and check in. We won’t be able to go to our room right away as it will still be early in the morning. At the check in desk they will give us all our tickets.
Because it will be too early to go to our rooms, Mom, Heather and I will walk around all the buildings to see what there is to see.
They will probably get something to eat at the food court.
I will just be happy seeing everything.
In the early afternoon Lynne, Nikki & Jenny will come to the hotel. I know I will be happy to see Nikki again.
Once we can go to our room, I will have a chance to get out of my wheelchair and have a bit of a rest. I will probably be very tired.
After a rest it will be time for us to get ready to go out for dinner. We are going to Chef Mickey’s. I’ve been there before. It was fun.
All of us (Lynne, Nikki, Jenny, mom, Heather and I) will take a bus to the Contemporary hotel which is where the restaurant is. It will probably take awhile to get there. Nikki and I will stay in our wheelchairs on the bus.
At the hotel we’ll take an elevator up to the restaurant. We might have to wait for a few minutes before we can go into the restaurant.
When it is our turn, someone will probably take some pictures of us.
The restaurant is a buffet. That means that Mom and Heather will take turns going to get their food. Lynne and Jenny will go get their food too. Nikki will stay with me at the table because she doesn’t eat any more either. I just want to see the characters.
Mickey, Minnie, Chip, Dale, Donald and Goofy are at this restaurant. They take turns coming around to the tables to see everyone. Mom will take lots of pictures of me and the characters. It gets pretty noisy in the restaurant. I think that it will be a lot of fun.
Something else that is fun at Chef Mickey’s is that the Monorail goes right through the restaurant. I like to watch it.
After everyone is finished eating, we will take the bus back to our hotel. We will all be very tired."

Once I've got the text all worked out I'll print it and then put it into an 8x8 scrapbook and use as many pictures as I can find to go with the words.

If you've taken the time to read all the way through, if you see any errors-like the wrong characters at CM, please let me know. I won't be printing most of it out right away.

thanks

Angelbearmom,
I think it sounds great and it's a wonderful social story that must have taken a lot of time and thought.

From what I have read about your son, that is a lot of language to comprehend. As his mother, clearly you know more but if his language is on a 1-2 year old level (as I read above)-

Stick to pictures instead of so many words
Simplify the process (example: drive to airport may be enough if he does not have the concept of 3 hours...)
Break it up into smaller "books" like going to the airport, in the airport, the airplane etc.

I have pictures of Disney in a Word document, PM me if you want them.

For the airline/airport part, there is a link to the Orlando airport website in the disABILITIES FAQs thread (the post about air travel). The airport website has links to some pages with good pictures of the airport/things you will see there.

You should also be able to get some pictures from the airline website that you are flying on.
