Picky Husband needs chocolate desserts in the MDRs

Hi everyone!

I am back for more amazing advice. My DH is as plain Jane as they come with respect to food. He likes pub foods and BASIC chocolate desserts. He is in love with the Chocolate Molten Lava Cake on DCL, but I know that is generally only served on (I think) Captain's Gala night. Is there a hope and a prayer that if we let our server know of his pickiness/love of lava cake at the beginning that he could get it every night of the cruise? Or....can someone tell me if he would have the option to get something like the chocolate cake that they give people for birthdays with perhaps a side of warm chocolate chip cookies? He is just so hard to please in the MDRs. I know he could always just pass on things and head to Cabanas, but it would be nice if we could make him happy somehow in the MDRs.

It's certainly an option to let your server know what would make your husband happy. And, if it's do-able, they would see that it happens. If you can give them several options (warm chocolate chip cookie OR chocolate lava cake OR a celebration mousse, etc). I've never really had an issue getting something chocolate for dessert.

Just as a note - Cabanas (for dinner) serves the same menu that the other MDRs do. It's not a buffet for dinner.

...I am the same as your DH and sometimes the kids menu has better (to me) options than the adult. And if that fails, there's also the Mickey bar

I'm not a big chocolate fan, but it seemed like there was always something chocolaty on the menu. If there wasn't anything that struck my fancy, I defaulted to the ice cream sundae of the night or a Mickey bar. Some of those sundaes were delicious! i think you can get warm chocolate chip cookies from room service...

Thanks guys! I seem to ask the tough questions. LOL I am generally lucky to get a handful of replies. Most people must be like me and enjoy the opportunity to try new things. My DH is so set in his ways that he doesn't even try to see what else he might enjoy. I tell him all the time that cruises are the perfect opportunity to broaden his horizons because if you don't like something, you didn't have to pay for it and you can get anything else you want.....but alas, he remains boring.

Hey it's a fellow picky husband! Should we set a play date??

Anyway, mine decided creme brûlée was his end-all be-all. Most nights it was a matter of grabbing it from another dining room's spread, but the last night was the farewell dinner where it wasn't being served. Except that our waiter showed up with one put aside specifically for my husband!

So I would absolutely mention it to your waiter to see if it's possible. It might be a special, prepared from scratch thing - or it might come onboard just needing finishing, in which case he would certainly see the value in grabbing you one... I think Maurice ended up with an extra $20 or $30 just from the 3 of us on a 5 night!

I would ask the first night at dinner and see if they could do a repeat every night.

My husband orders a Romaine salad wedge with bleu cheese dressing every night of the cruise whether it is on the menu at that MDR or not. That and Mickey bars are his top of the list menu items. On one cruise at dinner, he asked if there was a way to get a bran muffin or two to take back to the cabin for a late night snack. The server came back with 4, lots of butter and this was repeated every single night at the end of dinner.
Very accommodating and really helpful. I bet he can get his lava cake.

I don't typically eat dessert so I can't say for sure what is on the menus. But I do recall that on one of our cruises, one of our tablemates was absolutely fanatic about chocolate so the server would just bring her whatever was on the menu that night that was chocolate without her even asking. After the second night she didn't even bother looking at the dessert menu and just let the server bring whatever.

OP, how fussy is your DH? Is he particular about quality as well as the quantity of chocolate? He might need to lower his expectations on the quality. As much as I enjoy chocolate, I'm fussy about it too, and WDW and DLR have better chocolate desserts than the ships.

Overall, he is just boring. Nothing unusual. Basic fudgey chocolate cake, chocolate chunk cookies, chocolate lava cake, cookie dough ice cream, drumsticks (ice cream), brownies (no nuts, cheesecake swirl, Nada...plain brownies). If it gets at all froofy or "hoity-toity" as he calls it, it's ruined. Lol He's crazy. What can I say? Lol

You could check the desserts on the kids' menus as well. On Frozen night, the kids menu had chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. (It looks like they have a similar thing on Pirate night as well, but it might have strawberry sauce with it.)

Remember that he can always order a Mickey bar which is basically a plain ice cream bar. It isn't on the menu but he could get one every night if he asks for one.

I am a huge fan of desserts in general and we order one of everything every night....and a creme brulee, even if it is not on the menu. The dining team does a great job of doing whatever they can to accommodate the guests. I would just ask them to bring every chocolate dessert they can find, if your restaurant does not have one on the menu that night then they will probably grab one from one of the other restaurants.
