Picking up luggage at mco to DME

Don't want to use the luggage delivery system, mainly because we will have baby formula and stuff for our young children in our suitcases.

I haven't been to Orlando airport in over 20 years. I believe there is a tram or rail or something? Is that before or after you claim baggage? Are there airport luggage carts available at the baggage claim to put our baggage on for the walks to DME or is it short enough it's not needed?

You take the tram BEFORE you get your luggage. Yes they do rent luggage carts near the luggage pickup. Don't think DME is too far from luggage pickup, if I remember correctly, however, I am usually so excited to be going there that it's a bit of a blurr.

I think it's definitely a hike from luggage pickup to DME so a cart will be a necessity especially with little ones in tow. To me, this would be JUST why I'd go with DMEs luggage service. Could you not take enough for the first 24 hrs in carry ons and let Disney do the shlepping for you?

I could but the baby's formula can't be purchased in the us so we are packing a big can in the checked bag.

Unless anyone here can confirm an airline will let me bring the big can on the aircraft in my carry on. Anything I've read says we can only bring enough formula for the duration of the flight.

That is premixed formula (i.e., a liquid). If it's powered formula you're referring to, there are no limits, provided it fits in your carryon.

That being said, I'm not a fan of the luggage service after having a couple of bad experiences. If it makes you more comfortable, by all means, retrieve your luggage yourself. For me, it's must less stressful to know where my luggage is when I leave the airport, but some people really love not having to deal with carrying the luggage themselves.

A couple things to keep in mind...

1) There are two baggage claims. Side 'A' and Side 'B'. I *BELIEVE* DME is on side B, so getting the bags from that baggage claim and getting to DME is no more than walking down a hallway. If your claim is on the opposite side, after getting your bags, you need to go back to level 3, cross to Side B, then go down to the level DME is on. Not a big deal, but you should know that.
2) IMO, you should either put the formula in your carryon, or split it among checked bags (preferably both at the minimum). What would you do if the one checked bag you put the formula in gets "misdirected" by the airline? Plan accordingly.

To clarify....yes, DME is located on Side B, level 1 of MCO. Some airlines arrive on Side A. This is how it works if you arrive on Side A.....
Off the plane and to the tram.You are on level 3. The tram will bring you to the main terminal. If you are getting your luggage from baggage claim you would stay on Side A, and go down to level 2 to baggage claim and get your bags. Then back up to level 3, cross through the main terminal to Side B, on level 3, and go down to level 1 and to DME.
If arriving on Side B....go to tram, on level 3. Off tram, into the main terminal, down to level 2, get bags, down to level 1 to DME.

Many people don't tag their bags and then bring them to the bus. At the risk of being 'chastised' again, if you bring bags to the bus, the driver will be expecting a tip for baggage handling.

esp if powdered bring in carry on but if you do pack in checked bag make sure you have it in more than one checked bag in case one bag does not make it with you and yes checked bags can be delayed this includes anything like clothes and diapers besides formula

Anything that has a high value to you should go in your carry-on if at all possible. I would carry the baby formula on, and then maybe ship some down ahead to your resort. No way would I pack something that necessary in my checked luggage.

Will definitely pack the formula in the carry on now that I know I can. I will be bringing ready made version of it for the plane and airport. That makes me feel a whole lot better knowing I can do that. I did a grocery delivery order with diapers and other foods, so I'm ok there.

Walking from baggage claim (carousels) to the Magical Express welcoming area can be comparable to one of the following situations in a medium sized football stadium:

1. (B side baggage claim not at the Hyatt Hotel) Going from halfway up the grandstand say at about the 30 yard line to the top of the grandstand in the same corner.

2. (B side at the Hyatt) Going from halfway up the grandstand at about the 30 yard line on the level to the other end of the field and up the rest of the way to the top corner.

3. (A side not at the Hyatt) Going from halfway up the grandstand down to the ground, directly across the field, and up the other grandstand all the way.

4. (A side at the Hyatt) Going from halfway up the grandstand down to the ground, diagonally across the field (dodging temporary concert stages) to the far corner and all the way up that grandstand.

(In the actual case down and up are reversed; the welcoming area is on the lowest level.)

Whether your airline arrives "A side" or "B side" or "near the Hyatt," walking from the main terminal tram stop to baggage claim is comparable to walking from a goal post to a grandstand near the 10 yard line and going up halfway.

Add to that, hauling everything with you you took on the plane (carry on bags, car seats, strollers, kids) and then doing half of that walk with whatever you checked. It is not as simple as a stroll across the grass.

Most other parts of the world have soccer (there aka "futbol" or even "football") stadiums whose layout is quite similar.

Guests from abroad may need to clear or reclear customs in Orlando, which is done before taking the tram. Then there is the choice of putting the bags on the other conveyor belt (comparable to clearing customs prior to Orlando arrival), walking out to the tram empty handed (or with carryons), and claiming the bags again at the main terminal carousels. If it is still before 10 PM, bags will be delivered to the rooms by Magical Express at the guest's option or if the bags have the yellow DME tags.

And many people have no idea how long a football field is. I'm familiar with football fields. And how long they are. I'm also very familiar with MCO and the walk from either side and the DME area. But.....I have yet to understand the football field analogy. If it confuses someone that totally 'gets' the set up, I can't begin to understand how someone who is unfamiliar with the area is going to do.
I think the football field analogy isn't a good one.

We have football here, and lots of American football coverage I don't however watch it so the football analogies are lost on me .
