Picking a pearl??? Is it worth it ??

Planning on trying this for the first time, this trip next week with my daughters...Any thoughts? Any Tips ???

My daughter always enjoyed doing this. The pearl itself is not expensive, but the jewlery settings can be. So you can elect to not have it set in jewelry or get your own, beforehand even. There have been other discussions on this site about "pearl cages" or search for them on sites that sell/auction all sorts of stuff (not sure if I can mention them here). One even has the look of a princess carriage, so is Disneyish.

Same here. My daughters absolutely loved this, however, it turned out pretty expensive to get the cage and necklace (for each of my daughters and my wife I paid over $300.) The oyster itself is like $15. If you don't mind spending, it'll probably cost you around $60 for a pearl, setting and necklace. It was well worth it though, they haven't taken them off since.

If you have a silver chain, you can use that to save some $. The one they sell are pretty flimsy for kids. 2/4 have broken already... however, they are pretty.

My DD has done it twice and my wife has done it once (all at Downtown Disney). As the PP mentioned, it is the potential jewelry that can get pricey. All three times, we got really pretty pearls.

They told us the best pearls come from the ugliest, hairyist oyster you can find in the bucket.

If you are sentimental then it will be worth it. We did this in Feb with my 2 sons. One son picked a pearl for my mil and one picked a pearl for me. We recorded it. They felt special and it is special to me because my son picked it for me and because whenever I wear it it will remind me of all the fun and memories we had on our trip. I bought the cinderella coach to hold it in. It's really pretty.

We did this for my 4 year old daughter recently. We got a simple setting and put it on a silver chain we brought from home and only spent about $35. She really enjoyed it and I think it was a more worthwhile souvenir than a shirt or a stuffed animal. She always get compliments on her real "grown up" jewellery when we let her wear it for special occasions.

DD and I love it. We have done it three times. I have three necklaces and an pair of earrings, plus four loose pearls for a yet-to-be-determined creation.

In fact, I always ask DH for at least three oysters.

My two boys have always loved picking a pearl for mom...or grandma...or girlfriends as they've gotten older. Once my younger son got a set of twins so I was able to get a set of earrings and a necklace! We love it and is not to be missed on our list of things to do when in Epcot.

I definately think money well spent. I got mine at Epcot on our first trip in 2007. I wear it almost every day & I haven't had any problems with it. I just got a simple setting for it & used my own chain.

It's a great souvenir. Something I can wear everyday that reminds me of the trip that started our Disney addiction without it screaming Disney.

My daughter and I did this and it was very fun! I would recommend going to the spot in the Japan Pavilion at Epcot, as they make it a very big deal there! It is a very fun ceremony! We went close to when they open, so there wasn't even a wait. We both already had necklaces with special charms on them, so I got the carriage style cages from Ebay and those are quites cute and inexpensive. We have had them since 2010, wear them almost daily, and they have held up okay.

do they sell the carriage style in epcot or dtd, or any other Disney themes? I have never done this before or really paid much attention to it, but my dgd will love it. if I have to get one off ebay to get Disney style, how do I get pearl put in? do they do it there and how much do they charge to put in your own?

I have never heard of this (amazing considering my user name, right?)! Sounds like a unique souvenir with a lot of sentimental value as other posters mentioned. Plus, t shirts get too small, worn out, etc...this is something you can keep forever.

I did one in Japan last year and I wear it every day. I LOVE my ring. I picked an ugly one and got a decent size one and chose a simple ring setting. I get lots of compliments on it.

Loved it, absolutely worth it to us & can't wait to do it again! The whole experience of waiting in line, watching everyone else ahead of you go through the process is just as exciting as picking your own. We had a blast & have a keepsake that we'll hold onto forever. We did ours in Japan at Epcot.

I have only done it once and got a 7.5 white pearl with a pinkish tint on it. I didn't buy any mounting for it, but plan to eventually.

We LOVED this! DD got a silver/blue one and i got TWO! It's usually busy, we waited about 15 min but they do a little ceremony when they open the shells. It's totally worth it, dd had hers set into a simple sweet necklace pendant and I had mine set into stud earrings, we'll do it again next year for gifts I think.

I read through a huge thread on this a few months ago and I herd of a few blue oysters, gold oysters and a few pink ones but I never read of any black ones. I heard the ones with blue tinge have blue oysters but I do not know if that is true.
