I'm thinking of learning a martial art. I want to get in shape and learn how to defend myself. I know of different martial arts but I can't figure out how to pick one. I don't think I'd want to compete. I also don't know how to pick a studio.

I'm in my late 20s if that matters.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Your going to get as many answers as there are Martial Arts each proclaiming their dominance it certain areas, I would suggest going to the studios find out their philosophy and see if it fits your lifestyle. I took Kenpo (know better as Kung Fu) for 4 yrs and was very happy with their training and defense beliefs. But like I said it is going to be a personal choice.

First, I would break out your phone book and find out what is available to you. Then do some research and finally drop into the places and see what their policies are as far as signing up & $$$$.

Martial Arts requires Discipline, so be prepared for that.
The girl next door is only 9 and is expected to go to her Tae-Kwon-Do everyday excluding Sundays and she does.
